Provider Insider, Spring 2023
April, May, June 2023
Happy Spring Providers!
Your friends at Clackamas Child Care Resource & Referral are heading into Spring with renewal at heartđź’š. Along with ongoing training for all early childhood professionals, we have a very special evening planned for directors and owners. Please mark your calendars and RSVP to come to the Provider Appreciation Dinner, April 5th, 6:30-8:30pm. This is a great time for you to connect with other child care directors and owners, increase your professional network and share a laugh with peeps. Each participant will also be offered a choice of high quality classroom materials along with free training planned on applying the materials to learning.
Mark your calendars and encourage your staff to attend the first annual Clackamas CCR&R Regional Conference: Empowering Early Childhood Professionals, June 3rd, 2023. The keynote speaker, Kelly Wilson, has a timely message, "Empowering People Through Investment in Shaping Behavior: A Family’s Journey". We have workshops planned to support and prepare our field to be ready for children who are at all stages of development. The conference will be held at the Monarch Hotel in Clackamas and will include workshops in English and Spanish. Registration information coming soon.
Thank you to all of you who filled out the Market Price Study, 91% of Clackamas providers responded!! The data is used by Oregon State University to publish information on the climate of child care in Oregon. The last Market Price Study, completed in 2020, was used by ODHS to raise subsidy rates.
Do you have children in high school? Look for Clackamas CCR&R to be at their career fairs! CCR&R’s Tiffany Nguyen-Van and Dianice Torrado attended the Oregon City High School career fair to talk about the rewarding and important work of early childhood education. Tiffany and other CCR&R staff will be attending career fairs and information sessions throughout Clackamas county all Spring.
Best,
Sandy Meados
CCR&R Program Coordinator

Resource Library - Emotional Intelligence and Literacy
Our Resource Library for this quarter is focusing on the influence of emotional intelligence and literacy. The five stages of literacy development are: emergent literacy, alphabetic fluency, words and patterns, intermediate reading, advanced literacy. We recognize the big need for behavior issues and how to address them. Let me tell you, you are not alone, here CCR&R presents the collection to explore Emotions and Literacy at the same time.
Lakeshore Moods & Emotions Book Set supports the national standards related to social-emotional development. With full-color photographs and super-simple text, our books foster children’s emotional growth, helping them understand their own feelings as well as the feelings of others. The main goal for the resource library is to bring more resources to explore in beneficial ways for children and adults to help reach educational goals.

Focus on the Pyramid Model
Our Purpose
In the first five years of life, experiences and relationships stimulate children’s development, creating millions of connections in their brains. Their brains develop connections faster in the first five years than at any other time in their lives. Our hope is that these newsletters will give you tools to help support your child's social and emotional development and prepare your child to enter preschool and Kindergarten ready to learn!
The Pyramid Model
The Pyramid Model is a framework for supporting the social and emotional development of our children. The goal of the Pyramid Model is to create an environment where every child feels good about coming to school. We do this by designing classrooms that promote a child's interest in learning and by building positive relationships among children, families, and staff.
Pyramid Model Quick Tip(s)
Regulation: Learning to Stay Calm
Self-Regulation is the ability to recognize and manage your emotions and behaviors in different settings and activities.
Important: We can begin teaching self-regulation skills in early childhood; however, a child may not be able to successfully use self regulation tools (such as breathing) on their own consistently until around age 8.
Children who learn to regulate their emotions:
Have an easier time making friends
Handle disappointment better
Relate more successfully with peers and adults
Are less impulsive
Teaching this Skill
Teach the following strategies when the children are calm and engaged. Remind children of the strategies when they need to calm down through use of visuals or props.
Controlled Breathing: Smell the Flower, Blow Out the Pinwheel
Using visual on the following page, have children smell the flower (to breathe in through their nose) and blow out the pinwheel (to exhale through their mouth). Repeat several times.
Belly Breathing Have children lie on their back on the floor and place a small stuffed animal on their stomach. When the children inhale and exhale rapidly have them notice what happens to the stuffed animal. Then have the children slow their breathing and notice what happens to the stuffed animal.
How You Can Help Children Self-Regulate
Teach clear positive expectations/rules daily
Model and discuss reasons for desired behaviors.
Validate feelings.
Assist with language through labeling actions, feelings, and emotions.
Provide positive feedback in response to the child regulating their behavior and help child regulate by modeling ways to calm down when needed.
Provide opportunities for developmentally appropriate play
Promote children’s independence across the day
Provide a place child can go to take a break and calm down
Inclusive Partners Tip of the Month
Did you know….
Using visuals in your classroom can help reduce anxiety and supports emotional regulation?
Posting and using visual schedules and expectations helps children have security in knowing what is coming next in the daily routine. This also helps adults be consistent which is an important trauma responsive and inclusive practice. Everyone feels safer and less anxious when they know what to expect and what is happening to and around them.
Visuals use words and/or pictures to communicate expectations. Some children might benefit from having access to individual sets of visuals showing the daily schedule, behavior expectations, and emotional regulation tools. A bonus of using visuals is that they promote literacy development and support multilingual classrooms as well!
Using visuals is an example of an inclusive practice that supports all children regardless of age or ability. Reach out to us at Inclusive Partners for some ideas for purchasing or creating visuals for your childcare space! Call 971-673-2286 or email DELC.InclusivePartners@ode.oregon.gov
