Buffett Bulletin
August 22
Hello, Buffett Family!
We are excited to bring you the weekly Buffett Bulletin. Each week you will get an email from me that includes this electronic newsletter in an effort to keep you informed of the exciting happenings, important reminders, breaking news, and amazing accomplishments happening at our school. Please count on finding useful tools and tips for students and parents as well. Once a month we will even produce a Special Edition that includes pictures of our events and athletics. In short, we want the Buffett Bulletin to be helpful as we progress through another successful year. I hope you enjoy our first edition of the Buffett Bulletin of the 2018-2019 school year.

Youth Frontiers Retreat - 7th Grade
We believe that to do well in school, students need to feel physically and emotionally safe. In our ongoing effort to create a safe, secure, and caring culture, we are having a Youth Frontiers Courage Retreat.
We are offering this high-energy, interactive retreat on Thursday, August 29th for team 7A and August 30th for team 7B. Please make sure your student arrives to school on time to take part in this awesome experience from the beginning.
Technology Information
Laptop Distribution Information
Thank you all for your patience as we work to get all students their laptops. We are hoping that all students have their laptop by Friday, August 24.
If your child still needs their laptop and they were at Buffett last year, here are some things you can do to help expedite the process:
- Send their bag to school with them
- Have a signed contract with ALL BOXES INITIALED not checked
- Send $20 if purchasing the optional insurance
- Clearly INITIAL beside YES if you would like the optional insurance or NO if you are opting out of the optional insurance
If your child is new to Buffett, make sure they have turned in a signed contract following all the bullets above except the first one.
Optional Protection Plan & Warranty Information
Your child's assigned device is protected by accidental warranty coverage. This warranty covers any damages that occur from normal wear and tear along with accidental damages. The warranty does not cover loss of the device.
Beyond the warranty, many of you have chosen to purchase the device protection plan offered by the district for $20. This protection plan covers damages not covered by the warranty unless the damages are deemed intentional in nature. The protection plan does cover theft of a device as long as a police report is filed within three days of the theft. Buffett's School Resource Officer can facilitate the filing of a police report.
Common Damages to Laptops
The most common damages we see at Buffett are cracked and broken screens. This type of damage occurs most often as the result of a drop. Some things to your child can do to reduce the chances of a broken screen are:
- always carry the laptop in the bag
- when moving around in class, close the lid and carry the device with both hands
- always zip the bag to avoid the laptop slipping out
- always WALK!
- carry the bag with the strap across the body
The next most common damage is missing or loose keys. It is extremely important to report any missing or loose keys right away. Under all keys, there is a rubber boot. We have been informed that if that rubber boot is missing, the warranty and protection plan WILL NOT COVER the cost of the replacement of the keys. The boots do not fall off, they are torn off. This type of damage is automatically deemed intentional. The entire keyboard has to be replaced if just one boot is missing. The cost of replacing a keyboard is $56.00.
Reporting Damages
All damages to student devices need to be reported as quickly as possible. To report damages, please follow these steps:
A usable but damaged device:
- Fill out the online form from Buffett's website.
- Explain in great detail how the damages occurred.
- Turn the device in for repair on a Friday to the concession stand window (far end of the commons).
- Mr. Cleaver, Building Technology Support, will be in at the concession stand window every Friday morning from 7:40-12:00.
An unusable device:
- Fill out the online form from Buffett's website from a home computer
- If you're unable to fill out the form at home, ask your child to ask their homeroom teacher to help them.
- Explain in great detail how the damages occurred.
- Your child can ask their homeroom teacher for a pass to Mr. Cleaver's office to drop their device off.
It can take 2-3 weeks for a device to be repaired because the device has to be sent into the warranty company. They cannot be fixed by our building tech support.
Required Physicals for 7th & 8th Graders
Every 7th grade student is required to have a complete physical dated after March 1, 2018. The state of Nebraska also requires every student to have the Tdap (tetanus and whooping cough) vaccine. This physical can also be used as an athletic physical if your student wants to participate in athletics. This needs to be on file prior to your student attending practice/tryouts.
Every 8th grade student wanting to participate in athletics for the 2018-2019 school year needs to have current physical dated after May 1, 2018. This needs to be on file prior to your student attending practice or tryouts.
Think Spring in New York!
Attention 8th graders! Are you interested in traveling with your peers over spring break? Would you love to see majestic views and the Statue of Liberty, the hustle and Bustle of Times Square, the sparkling lights of Broadway, or visit the set of a Late Night TV show?
Have you heard that 8th grade Buffett students have the opportunity to travel to New York City over spring break?
Bring your parents and come to a meeting Thursday, August 30th at 6pm in the library. Everyone is welcome! Students who have already registered for the trip do not need to attend.
Feedback For OPS Superintendent
Dear OPS Families:
Your feedback is needed as new OPS Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Logan gathers baseline information about your current experience with the Omaha Public Schools. The information you share will help the district better identify opportunity areas to better serve our students.
You will receive an email, text and robocall encouraging your participation. The survey should take no longer than approximately 5 minutes to complete and will be open through Sept. 7.
Thank you in advance for your feedback and support of the Omaha Public Schools. We look forward to a wonderful and productive school year!
