Letter from Mr. Larsen

Hello Riverview Families,

I am honored to be your new principal this year. I attended Riverview Elementary, K-6, and graduated from Snohomish High School in 1988. I am entering my 27th year as an educator and my 23rd year as an elementary principal. I am absolutely thrilled to be reconnecting with friends, families, and acquaintances from my years in Snohomish and am looking forward to building new relationships with Riverview students and our community in the years ahead.

With the summer coming to a close, I want to take this opportunity to welcome you and your child(ren) back to school. The thoughtful and supportive environment that made Riverview so special to me as a child is still alive and well. It fills my bucket to know the tradition of excellence established years ago by the dedicated and caring staff of yesteryear still thrives in the new Riverview 2.0 building today.

In the short time I have been at Riverview I have been impressed by our kind, caring, and professional staff. I am grateful to be surrounded by such energetic and compassionate individuals. Together with parents and community members, we will work hard to continue Riverview’s legacy as a unique and wonderful place to learn and grow.

During the coming weeks, our staff will be working hard setting up their classrooms, attending professional development sessions, and planning with their teams. This is all being done to prepare for the best 2021/22 school year possible. We will kick things off for families with a Meet the Teacher event on September 2. This year the event will look a little different. We will host the event in the circular parking lot in front of the building (weather permitting). We will also divide into three separate sessions based on alphabetical order of last names. The schedule will be as follows:

Meet the Teacher Event at Riverview (Thursday, September 2nd)

  • 1-1:30 p.m. (A-J)
  • 2-2:30 p.m. (K-Q)
  • 3-3:30 p.m. (R-Z)

*Families with multiple last names may choose any of the sessions that apply to them.

Hosting the event outside and dividing it into three groups will allow us to maximize spacing and maintain more appropriate numbers for each session. Since we will not be in classrooms during this event, we ask that you do not bring supplies at this time. Although masks are not required outside, I am encouraging families to wear them during this event and follow all safety and distancing guidelines. Our goal with taking extra safety measures is to keep all Riverview students safe and in-person for the 21/22 school year.

I am excited to welcome our students back on the first day of school on Wednesday, September 8th. The first day of school for Kindergarten will be Monday, September 13.

Sincerely,

Derek Larsen

Principal

Snohomish K-6 Remote - Elementary distance learning program

As we have shared with our school community, we are planning for a full-time return to in-person learning for the 2021-2022 school year. However, due to the fact that a vaccine is not currently available for those age 11 and under, we have decided to offer a distance learning program for those families who are not comfortable with their elementary child(ren) returning to school in-person. If you are interested in your child(ren) participating in an elementary distance learning program (Snohomish K-6 Remote) for the 2021-2022 school year, please carefully read the information in this letter to families.

Masks/face coverings

Masks/face coverings are required inside of all K-12 schools and on all buses, regardless of vaccination status. This is a state requirement. Masks/face coverings are not required when outdoors. Mask/face covering exceptions may be made for students with certain medical conditions or receiving special education services in some cases and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Is your child is up-to-date on required state immunizations?

Every student enrolled/registered in school or childcare in the state of Washington must have medically verified immunization records on file with the school in which they are enrolled/registering. Please take the coming weeks to check with your child's physician to make sure your student is up-to-date on all their required immunizations. Medically verified immunization records include one or more of the following:

The update to Chapter 246-105 WAC has three major focuses:
  • It now requires medically verified immunization records for school and childcare entry.
  • It clarifies conditional status in regard to school and child care immunization requirements and implementation.
  • It changes the Tdap immunization requirement to 7th through 12th grades.
