Empower All People to be Healthy, Lifelong Learners
Kia kaha - do your best * Kia māia - be courageous * Kia manawanui - have a heart
Principal's Message
Kia ora koutou,
Kia Kaha te Reo Māori
‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ we’re saying - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.
Yesterday we had the performance group ‘Taki Rua’ come into our kura and perform their play, Hine Kihāwai. The whole 50 minute performance was in Te Reo Māori and it made me think about our place of teaching and learning Te Reo Māori at Puketapu School.
We have a growing group of students who now are bilingual in te reo Māori and te reo Pakeha. What percentage of their day is spent speaking reo Māori v reo Pakeha? What opportunities are there to learn Te Reo Māōri at our school in our classrooms? How can we support our staff, students and community in learning Te Reo Māori?
The reason this resonates with me so strongly is that I cannot speak te reo Māori as a proud Māori male. My father speaks fluently and I feel embarrassed in many situations that I don’t. How do we show our ‘Kia Maia’ value of being courageous and now learning the language as an adult. This is my challenge over the next few years and one that I want to prioritise. It is something that we will continue to work on in our school too with all of our Aotearoa learners.
“Strength for an endangered language comes from its status, people being aware of how to support revitalisation, people acquiring and using it and from the language having the right words and terms to be used well for any purpose."
Next week is Maori Language Week so be courageous, show ‘Kia Maia’ and use the Te Reo Māori you do know with others.
Kia kaha, kia māia, kia manawanui

Staff Changes at Puketapu School
Mrs Lesley McDonald has announced that she will be retiring at the end of this year.
Mrs McDonald has been a taonga of our school for a very long time and we can't even begin to count how many learners have enjoyed her teaching. We will miss her and we hope she has a very enjoyable last few months at Puketapu School before her very well earned retirement.
Mrs Ana Whelan is also leaving at the end of 2018... to have a baby! We wish her all the best and look forward to having her back with us after her maternity leave.
With the changes and our growth this year we are already advertising for three teacher vacancies to join our team for 2019. These are listed on our website www.puketapu.school.nz under Our People

Funky Friday!
The kaitiaki kids have spent a lot of time at the beach and out in our natural environment this year and have been disappointed about the rubbish they have encountered. As a group they decided that they could make a difference by reducing the single use plastic straws that are heading to our landfills daily.
Starting with the White Pear Cafe they want to gift stainless steel straws to eliminate the need for plastic. Kaitaiki means guardians of our environment and these kids are certainly that!
Gold coin donation to contribute to their cause please. Spot prizes will be handed out in the student showcase that day
