International Cooking started the week in Italy with a classic Italian dessert of cannoli and we ended our journey halfway round the world in Thailand preparing Tod Man Khao Pod or Thai corn fritters, chicken satay with a delicious peanut dipping sauce, and Goreng Pisang or Thai Fried Bananas with a sweet red chili sauce. Next stop the Philippines

Assistant Deputy Fire Chief, Jesse Boyle, has been putting in about 15 hours a week in preparation, classroom teaching and practical fire evolutions to teach classes each week. All seven High School Interns seem to be thriving and appear to thoroughly enjoy the program. They normally show up an hour early and eat lunch with any Firefighters that happen to be here at the station. Over the last week alone, they were able to work with CFD Firefighters on a small wildfire incident, learning how the fire spread and how to properly extinguish, all was hands on. Along with their classroom teachings, they also took a tour of three different buildings in town at different stages of construction, so they could learn about building construction and how it impacts firefighting (Building Construction was one of the topics in this week’s classes). The High School Seniors participate in two 3 hour classes/practical training sessions each week. Each 3 hour class is structured with a classroom teaching portion, quiz, handouts, and study materials for upcoming class, followed by a practical evolution in our drill yard. Each student is issued their own fire locker with a set of structural PPE fitted and sized to each student. They must maintain proper care of this PPE throughout the entire course.
You can check out some of the action on our fire Facebook page.

This program has taken a positive life on its own, helping to mentor a great group of High School Seniors on valuable lessons in the life. These young adults are really learning, which I credit Assistant Deputy Boyle with putting 100% effort and time into developing a great program.
Obviously it is our goal, with the school systems support and assistance, to continue this program in the future. We have had to absorb a fair amount of costs into the program with hired Firefighter details to assist during the labor intensive practical evolutions, materials for the classroom, plus time away from Deputy Boyle’s primary duties as Assistant Deputy Fire Chief, but we feel it has been worth it!
Please feel free to reach out and come see your students in action!
Fire Chief, Craig Weston

Ms. Whalen's fully-remote biology class made their own "Body Systems for Dummies" books last week. Students had to choose a system and then create an instruction manual explaining the function, structures, associated diseases, and more! Check out these samples from different students' books:
