Burbank Bulletin

November 25, 2019

We have a short stretch ahead to Thanksgiving. Time is certainly flying by! If I don’t see you before the Thanksgiving break, please accept my wishes to you and your family for a happy, restful, thankful, and pie-filled holiday. For me, it's pumpkin pie (and ice cream) all the way!

We have many reasons to be thankful this Thanksgiving holiday season at Luther Burbank. We are especially grateful for our Burbank families and for our larger school-wide community. This year, we were able to provide Thanksgiving baskets to close to 25 MRE/LBMS families with the support of our community partners. A very SPECIAL thank you to Mrs. Perkins for all of her efforts with this annual community project which helped spread the bounty to many. Thank you, Mrs. Perkins!

As we step into the week ahead and take a peek into December, we know that we will be busy. Basketball tryouts take place next week; auditions for drama begin next Tuesday; a school dance is planned for December 6th; our winter concert will take place mid-month, and the first trimester will come to a close with report cards going home on December 19th.

Yours in partnership,

Laura Friend

Welcome Colleen Goldstein, New Title 1 Math Specialist at LBMS

I am pleased to announce that Colleen Goldstein will be joining us as our new Title 1 Math Specialist at Luther Burbank beginning today, Monday. Ms. Goldstein joins us from the Westford Public Schools where she has worked as a math interventionist for the past five years. In addition to serving as a math interventionist, Ms. Goldstein has also taught middle school mathematics and served as a mathematics tutor at both the middle and high school levels. During the interview and selection process, Ms. Goldstein's knowledge and passion for mathematics were abundantly evident. We are fully confident she will be a great asset to our team. Please join me in welcoming her to our school community with open arms.

Middle School Basketball About to Begin, Parent/Athlete Meeting Tonight

A mandatory parent/athlete meeting for all students interested in our interscholastic basketball program will take place this evening, Monday, 25th, at 6:00 PM. This meeting will cover all information relevant to the upcoming season. Tryouts will be held next week in the Burbank gymnasium. All interested students must have registered online and have a current physical on file with the nurse prior to trying out. Please click here to access the online registration. We are fortunate to have both Coach McClintock and Coach Dillon returning as coaches for the season. Please show your school spirit and join us to cheer on our teams. Look for our basketball game schedules online.

Team Joslin, Collecting Gently Used Sneakers and Shoes

Our very own LBMS parent and NRHS school nurse, Sarah Cosentino, has been selected as a member of Team Joslin Diabetes Center to run in the 2020 Boston Marathon. As a school nurse who works closely with students and families living with diabetes, this organization is very important to Mrs. Cosentino. As one of her fundraisers, she will be collecting gently used shoes and sneakers of all kinds. The organization with whom she is working will pay Team Joslin $0.40 per pound of gently used footwear which will then be repurposed. If you are cleaning, organizing and de-cluttering for the holidays, and getting ready to donate some shoes, please keep me these efforts in mind!

There is a bin for collection of sneakers/ shoes/ boots in the lobby of both MRE and LBMS. Thank you in advance for any shoe donations!

Luther Burbank Drama, Auditions

Auditions for this year's LBMS Musical, Seussical, Jr., will be held on Tuesday, December 3, and Thursday, December 5, 2019, between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. Students will need to attend both audition dates if they would like to be considered for all roles, unless they've made alternate arrangements ahead of time with the director, Ms. Hawkes. Rehearsals will run every Tuesday and Thursday through the performances on Friday, March 27 and Saturday, March 28, 2020. All events will be held in the auditorium.

LBMS School Dance, December 6th

The Luther Burbank Student Council will sponsor a dance on Friday, December 6th, from 6-8. $5 admission and snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. Dances are a great way for students to socialize and show off their dancing moves!

Middle School Matters Parent/Teacher Book Study

The first meeting of the Middle School Matters Parent/Teacher Book Study was held on November 14th. Our faculty very much enjoyed discussing the first chapters of the book with parents. We look forward to our next meeting in January.

Great book, great content, great parents, great discussion!

Music ADDED to Positive Sign Thursdays at Luther Burbank

Each Thursday, our Student Council starts the day with a good dose of positivity and thankfulness. Students and staff greet students as they enter the building with a positive message. Most recently, we have also added music to our Positive Sign Thursday fun. Mr. Newton has initiated a playlist request for staff and students. Each Thursday, songs from the playlist are selected and music is streamed through our intercom system filling our hallways with music (and, sometimes, dancing students and teachers!) How can you not smile?
