Tricks to Try: Test Style Questions and "Test Prep"
The Test Style Questions strategy, as described in Revisit, Reflect, Retell, by Linda Hoyt, is utilized to help students review core content. The teacher needs to model for students how a test-writer creates a question (A question, a correct answer, and three distractors that are very close to the correct answer.) Share test stems with your students that they can use to create their question. Once they create their question, they need to write in the correct answer and then draft the three incorrect answers. The ability to think about answers that are "tricky" or almost correct, takes student thought to a completely different level and giving students the opportunity to write test style questions makes them more comfortable and intimate with that format. Suddenly, those tests don't seem quite so intimidating.
