Superintendent Update

Caldwell Parish Schools

Greetings Team Caldwell!

The second semester is off to a great start! It's hard to believe that we are half way through this school year, and all that comes with the spring semester is upon us. I know that you are all faithfully working through your content and beginning to feel the sense of urgency that comes with the anticipation of spring testing. I am so excited to see and hear about the energy and focus that is taking place at each school!

While school and district accountability are always a priority for us, we are more concerned about making sure our students continue to recover from the learning loss due to COVID and continue to have amazing classroom experiences. Testing is simply a means for us to measure our students' progress, so I encourage you to keep that in mind as you plan your lessons this semester.

I know that a lot of work is being done with our literacy initiatives, ANet and MTSS, and I appreciate your willingness to dig deep and think outside the box. As educators, we are always looking for new and innovative ways to ensure our students have the very best learning experiences and reach their full potential. Thank you for your commitment to provide these opportunities for the students of Caldwell Parish!

Teacher Spotlights

Early Childhood Spotlight

Early Childhood teachers work hard daily to keep lessons developmentally appropriate while using teaching strategies that enable their young learners to gain valuable skills that will help them to be successful. Small group instruction is used to meet students where they are and build upon their individual skills. Teachers know that children learn best through play and they use a variety of opportunities to engage and teach. Early Childhood Small Groups

We are currently giving the K - 6 Middle of Year Acadience Benchmark Assessment. Acadience Reading is an universal screener to find students who may be at risk for reading difficulties. We use the data collected to identify skills students need in order to target their instruction during intervention and small group instruction. We also monitor progress to check how students are doing with targeted instruction. We are excited to see the progress our students are showing on the Mid-Year Assessment. . Teachers, Interventionists, and school staff are working hard to meet the individual needs of our students.

School Board Appreciation Month

January is School Board Recognition Month and Caldwell Parish School Board is honored to celebrate its school board members for their dedication and commitment to the district’s schools and students. “Our school board members are selfless volunteers who spend long hours working to ensure all of our students have the opportunity to learn and grow,” Superintendent Nicki McCann said. “Celebrating School Board Recognition Month is one way to say thanks for all they do.” Serving as a link between the community and classroom, school board members are elected to establish the policies that provide the framework for public schools. The Caldwell Parish School board is responsible for an annual budget of $27 million (all funds combined), 1.572 students, and 7 campuses.

“School boards are essential to a strong public education system,” Louisiana School Boards Association (LSBA) Executive Director Janet Pope said. “They provide the local governance and oversight that makes it possible for school districts to serve students, including establishing a strategic plan, adopting policies, approving a budget, and selecting and evaluating a superintendent. It’s fitting that we celebrate them in January as their leadership is key to the success of every school district in Louisiana.” LSBA Board President Rose Dominguez echoed those same thoughts. “It’s the perfect opportunity to honor our school board members and let the communities they serve know about their many contributions.” Not only have we seen student growth in the classroom, but for the past couple of years, the board has been instrumental in guiding the various federal awards of ESSER funding towards needs of each school.

Those improvements have been targeted towards long-term benefits for the children of our parish. Some of the improvements include building pavilions and covered walkways, installing new playground equipment, building new tennis courts, improving air conditioning, updating intercom systems and improving fencing at various schools. We are excited that even more capital improvements that will last for future generations are being planned.

2023 Accelerate Summer Camp T-Shirt Design Contest

Good morning Camp Caldwell!

Believe it or not, we are already in the planning phases for Caldwell Parish 2023 Accelerate Summer Learning Camp. Last year we involved our students in the planning process by holding our first annual summer camp t-shirt design contest. This contest was such a huge success, we decided to once again hold a contest for the 2023 Accelerate Summer Camp T-Shirt design. We are making this contest available for all students K-12 just like the Summer 2022 contest because you never know who will emerge as talented artists or designers.

All who are interested in designing this year’s camp t-shirt should submit their idea/drawing on an 8x11 sheet of paper using our 2023 theme of “Camp Caldwell” by Friday, February 28, 2023.(Think outdoor camping with tents, wildlife, campfires and outdoor fun!) Individual student submissions are due to me at the school board office via interoffice mail or hand delivery. Please ensure the student’s full name, grade, and school are written on the back right hand corner of the paper.

All entries will be displayed in the hallway of the school board office. A panel of judges will select the winning design by Friday, March 10th. Once the winning t-shirt design is selected, the student will be recognized by the school district, be presented with a $50 gift card of their choice and of course have their design on the 2023 Accelerate Summer Camp t-shirt. I can’t wait to see the ideas and designs! I know we will be amazed by your talent!

Thank you for your support and participation,
