Te Aroha Primary Newsletter
Term 1 Week 8 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Tena koutou Parents and Whanau
Welcome back to week 8. It is a year ago that we went into our lockdown and children had to be taught online. How lucky we are compared to the rest of the world that we still have relative freedom to travel and move around within our own country.
This is our first digital newsletter. It will be linked to our school app and also be able to be accessed through our website. This will enable all parents to be connected to what is happening at school at any time of the day or night.
This week will once again, be an action packed week at Te Aroha Primary School.
Covid 19 / Coronavirus
As always anyone who is unwell should not be at school.
If your child has a cough or a cold they must not be sent to school. They need to be kept at home until they have recovered completely. We are having to phone an increasing number of parents to pick their child up because they are unwell.
If you have a particular concern about your child, you can contact Healthline at 0800 611 116 or their GP for medical advice.
SCHOOL HATS
Please send your child to school with his or her hat as it is very hot to play in the sun without wearing a hat.
A school hat is part of our school uniform and children are to wear these at morning tea and lunch times while outside or if outside at any other time as well.
This is to protect them from the sun and is part of our school sun safe policy.
School bucket hats can be purchased from the school office.
TE AROHA JUNIOR HOCKEY MUSTER
The Te Aroha Junior Hockey muster will take place on Monday 22 March 2021 from 3.30 – 4.30pm at Te Aroha Primary School

YEAR 7 AND 8 VACCINATIONS
The Waikato DHB has informed us that in the first round of vaccinations only Year 8’s will be vaccinated.
The Year 7 vaccinations will be completed with the second round of Year 8 vaccinations later in the year
SCHOOL APP
Please download this app to your phone as it will become one of the important parts of our emergency contact procedure should we ever need to use it.

Sport Notices
The last few weeks have been particularly hectic and I would like to thank all those parents who continually put their hands up to help us out. Without these people, we would not be able to enter as many teams as we do in things. Some of these people take annual leave to help us out and we need to make sure that we always show how grateful we are.
This week we have a team of 16 traveling to Thames to compete in Thames Valley Swimming. It is always hard to get enough cars to go out of town but we have managed to fit everyone in. Thanks to the 3 families who offered to help. Those children will be given meeting times and information.
On Friday a very small group will travel to Cambridge for Waikato Full Primary Swimming.
Basketball:
Draws for this week are on the app. It would be nice to see some more parents down there watching the children play. They are doing a great job.
A Tale From Room 9 - Short Movie Clip
Classroom Round Ups
Welcome to Felicity who joined our class today. Our Letterland work will be r, v and u and words that start with these letters. We are having a big phonological awareness drive in our class. Phonological awareness is a skill that allows children to recognize and work with the sounds of spoken language and it is the foundation for learning to read. I have included some information about this in your child's book bag today. In Maths we are working on number knowledge to 10 . We are focussing on reading and writing numbers correctly and counting and comparing sets.I will be at a meeting on both Thursday and Friday this week and Mrs Maisey will be in the class.
Rm 2 Miss Green
This week in writing we focus on writing personal recounts and practising sequencing ideas in the order that they happened. Some children are still practising writing a sentence independently using their word card for support. In maths we are practising counting forwards and backwards to 20 and ordering 1-20. We will be practising number problems within 10 and recording these sums correctly. Reading group levels change this week so you may notice when books come home this week. Please remember to practice reading words everyday. The more practice the more words children know.

Kia ora koutou
It is hard to believe that we are in Week 8 of the term already! Room 3 really enjoyed developing our soccer skills with Scott from WaiBop football last week!
Writing: We are looking at more exciting experiences to have at school that will help us to create writing that is interesting to read. We are also challenging ourselves to use WOW words for impact!
Reading: Our new morning routine is working well and I have been super impressed with how well everyone has remembered to do this.
Maths: We continue with our number workshops involving using a number line to help us solve addition and subtraction sums and looking at patterns of teen numbers.
Reminders for the week: Room 3 are no longer swimming as the water is now too cold. Library day is on Friday and Mrs Ashman will be in class on Wednesday and Thursday this week while I continue with testing and attending a course. Have an amazing week!
Please remember you can contact me through mswan@tearohaprimary.school.nz or via Seesaw.
Rm 5 Miss Entwisle
In Mathematics this week we will be finishing up Statistics and moving onto Number. Mr Tee will be in our class to help out for 20 minutes, 4 days a week providing support for our ALiM (Accelerated Learning in Mathematics) sessions. In Writing, our focus is on adding descriptions and details to our writing. We are becoming great observers and have been using our 5 senses to help us explore the world around us. Despite the cooler weather we have been enjoying learning new games and activities to keep us safe (and warm) in the pool. If children are not participating then contact via a note or Seesaw message is appreciated so that other arrangements can be made for their supervision during our swimming time. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact Miss Entwisle via the school office: 078848803; email: mentwisle@tearohaprimary.school.nz or through the Seesaw me
Rm 6 Mrs Bankier
This week in Room 6 we have Mrs Bartram in on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, I am away due to my husband having surgery. Mrs Bartram will be following our regular classroom programme.
I have been testing reading at the end of last week and will have this testing completed this week on Tuesday.
In reading we are learning to make choices about which activities to do related to our book / story. These choices are based around individual learning styles and different ways to present information. This is also a goal of having Student Agency during our learning times, managing ourselves and making choices about their own learning needs.
In maths we are learning to do sudoku puzzles to help with our problem solving skills and executive functioning skills. We are also continuing to work on place value of numbers.
With Mrs Bartram the class will be looking at our school and places that are special to them around the school, learning to draw a map of the school and label it.
Have a great week, Trina Bankier

With all testing for the term completed we can now start to work on the things that have shown up. In Reading children will be regrouped according to specific needs. Most children no longer need to focus on oral reading and the working out of words but they do need to focus on the deeper features of reading. This week that will be things like Main Ideas and retelling in sequence. For those who do need to work on oral reading we will be looking at using a variety of methods to work out unknown words, and self correcting.
In writing we will be focusing on punctuation- mainly the usage of capital letters and full stops- which are a never ending problem. The few that don't need this will look at more complex punctuation like speech marks and commas.
In Math we will continue to explore palace values and rounding so we can use it for more complex strategies. Inquiry will see us working from the saying..."if you don't know where you came from...then you won't know where you are; and if you don't know where you are, you won't know where you are going!!

The term seems to be running away with us, week 8 already!
Maths: This week we will continue to develop our addition and subtraction strategies
Literacy: We will work on developing our inferring skills this week, developing a character profile for Ada Hannam (the only woman survivor of the Penguin disaster). We will look at how the character has been portrayed through the eyes of the main character, Jack (her nephew).
Topic/Inquiry: Workshop week!! In previous years the senior hub have enjoyed this “hands on” learning. This week we will continue to grow our understanding of what a landform is and what lies beneath us.
Homework: Weekly quiz, (this is available online or hard copy) - reading (20 minutes each night).
Reminder: Due to the weather getting colder there will no longer be instructional swimming lessons however, if students wish to go for a quick dip near the end of the day this is still allowed.
Have a great week everyone.
Rm 10 Mrs Brittenden
Kia ora koutou - he wiki whakaongaonga kei mua. An exciting week ahead.
We will have a visit with Callum from Financial Literacy on Thursday and will be updating our Seesaw journals so that you can see some more of the work we are doing at the moment. Our aim is to have all our families connected so please let Mrs B know if you need some help to do this.
Maths - we investigate efficiency to solve an addition or subtraction problem with a mental strategy or algorithm. We are using large numbers so accuracy is the key.
Writing - we are developing a writers voice in our work to create impact. We are also looking at punctuation and word choice to support this.
Reading - our class novel "CUZ" has us hooked as we look at a journey of survival. This story is set in New Zealand.
Topic / Inquiry - we will begin workshops this week across our Hub to investigate landforms.
Here's to a great week.
