September Teacher Lesson of the Month
Every month RMS students have the opportunity to celebrate a teacher that put together a lesson that they loved! Our teachers have been working extremely hard to engage students. The TLOM is meant to celebrate the amazing lessons our teachers create and promote engagement in our classes.
Our September TLOM is awarded to Ms. Varekamp, our 7th and 8th grade technology teacher. She put together a lesson where the students worked hands on to build a paper tower. The student who nominated this lesson said, “building the tower was really fun. We got a certain amount of paper then pretty much got to do whatever we wanted and make it the tallest. I like the way they (Ms. Varekamp) teach because she makes everything a lot more hands on.” Check out the bulletin board outside the main office for more info about why the students loved her lesson!
September Students of the Month
RMS is once again partnering with the Beacon Elks Lodge to recognize students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade each month. Teachers and staff nominate students based on these tenets:
Overcoming obstacles
Demonstrates respect to the student body and faculty and/or honors and respects others' property.
Exhibits behaviors of an upstander.
Student is working to his or her potential and/or shows improvement in areas that are challenging.
Shows a strong commitment to continuing their education.
Demonstrates acceptance and tolerance of the differences in others.
Goes above and beyond to show support of others.Demonstrating the ability to work independently.
Exhibits good time management/organizational skills.
A small committee then reads through the nominations and chooses one student for each grade.

PBIS Updates
RMS (Respectful, Make Responsible Choices, Safe)
During classes last week, teachers shared information about the PBIS expectations for all of the settings in the school including the school bus. Starting on Tuesday, teachers and staff will be handing out tickets to students that demonstrate these expectations. Students will take their tickets and turn them into the main office. The tickets will be tallied for each student. When students receive 10 tickets, they will be able to choose an item from the school store.
National Bullying Prevention Month
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. PBIS kicked the month off by asking everyone (students and staff) to wear blue on October 4th. Throughout the month, there will be different activities planned to continue to promote bullying prevention. This past week, students were challenged to make friends with someone new at school. During the week of 10/11, students are challenged to be upstanders and stand up for someone. Students can also sign the pledge posted on the bulletin board in the Kiosk area by picking up a paw in the main office. There is also a month-long contest that started on Friday, October 8th. Students are asked to find the definition of the following words:kindness, acceptance, inclusion and unity and then illustrate what the words mean to them. They can do this by using their own words, a drawing, song lyrics, or poetry. Lastly students and staff are asked to wear orange on October 20 to help celebrate Unity Day. All of this information can also be found on the PBIS page of the school website.
Hispanic Heritage Month
Our Hispanic Heritage Month Bingo contest is over and five winners received a gift card for a free Glazed Over donut. This week's activity in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month will be to guess how many "FRIJOLES" are in a jar which will be in the lunch room for all students to participate. The top 3 winners will receive a $10 gift card to Tito Santana's and the top two winners will receive another special prize courtesy of Sra. Melendez.
Don't forget also that our Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest is due soon for those participating. Sra. DeCandia will have a meeting after school next week to make sure all participants are submitting their essays correctly.
