Blanche Dodd Bobcat News
February 2, 2021
A message from Principal Bolz
Welcome to February where our character trait this month is "Caring". Mrs. Roessler, school counselor, provides guidance lessons for each class throughout the month. You can read more about those guidance lessons in the "Counselor's Corner" below.
To focus on being a community of caring people, students have been challenged to perform a random act of kindness for someone. We are starting off this week, with a focus on checking in on others. During a time when our world is under a great deal of stress, it's important to take care of one another. We are asking others how they are doing, and then we are actively listening to their response. Students will write down their acts of kindness and add them to a poster in our cafeteria showing all the wonderful things our students are doing for others.
This month, talk to your children about various acts of kindness they can perform for others by themselves or with your family. The more we give to others, the more connected we will feel.
Wishing you a fabulous February!
It's a GREAT day to be a Bobcat at Dodd Elementary where we are...

The Counselor’s Corner
Hello Dodd Bobcats!
For the month of February we are learning about Caring. Caring means being kind, forgiving others, being compassionate, helping those in need, and showing empathy. Also, February 1st-5th is National School Counseling week! Please visit my website and click on the "National School Counseling Week" picture, to learn more about what I do as your School Counselor and to read fun books related to perseverance, determination, compassion, facing your fears, and overcoming mountains or blocks. Don't forget that you may visit my school website, complete a request form, and we can set up virtual or in-person counseling meetings. Whether you are in-person learning or distance learning, I am here for you!
Your Counselor,
Mrs. Roesler

Congratulations to our January Character Award Winners! These students were recognized for showing the character trait of "Fairness".

Covid-19 Reminder-Masks
Masks must be worn at all times with the exception of lunch and outdoor play. They must also be worn in the classroom except for students in 2nd and 3rd grades. There will be no exceptions, but please know that we will help our students adjust to this “new normal.” Talk to your student/s about proper mask wearing (covering the mouth and nose).
Please, send your student with two clean masks each day if possible. The reason for the second is to have a backup in case something happens to the first or it becomes soiled. Place the second mask in a Ziplock bag to keep it clean.
***The District is running very low on masks that we can provide to students. A mask is required for them to come to school at Dodd Elementary. Please, make sure that students have a mask every day.***
Health Screening Questions before sending students to school.
Below you will find the health screening questions you need to consider every morning.
Does the student or any family member have any of the following:
• A fever of 100°F. (38°C.) or higher or a sense of having a fever during the past 24 hours
• New or unexpected cough that cannot be attributed to another health condition
• New shortness of breath or difficulty breathing that cannot be attributed to another health condition
• New chills that cannot be attributed to another health condition
• A new sore throat that cannot be attributed to another health condition
• New muscle aches that cannot be attributed to another health condition or specific activity (such as physical exercise)
• New loss of taste or smell
• Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
• Currently living with a person who has exhibited symptoms of COVID-19 or is currently under quarantine due to close contact with a person suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19
YES or NO, in the past 14 days any of the following:
• Cared for or had other close contact with a person suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19
• Traveled internationally
If you answer YES to any of the above questions you cannot attend school that day, and you need to notify the school/nurse for further instructions.
What happens if my child does have a temperature?
Should your child develop a temperature of 100°F (38°C.) or greater there are certain steps that will have to occur prior to returning to school. Should your student develop a temperature at school they will be moved to the isolation room and the parent will be called immediately to pick up the student. Please have arrangements in place so that your child can be picked up if called.
Signs and Symptoms of Covid-19
Fever or chills, Cough, Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, Fatigue, Muscle or body aches, Headache, New loss of taste or smell, Sore throat, Congestion or runny nose, Nausea, Vomiting or Diarrhea. If you experience any of the above symptoms, call your physician.
We cannot stress it enough, please DO NOT send your child to school if they are not feeling well. We all need to consider the safety and wellbeing of everyone at Dodd Elementary.
What Happens if My Student is a Suspected or Confirmed Covid-19 Case?
Parents are required to inform the school via phone and email of any positive student case(s) of COVID-19 or student family cases of COVID-19. If a student has tested positive for COVID-19, a negative test is not required to return to school. Dodd Elementary Staff will help determine when your student may return and will notify those that have been in "Close Contact" defined by TEA.
Thank you,
Nurse Sally
Changing Instructional Delivery Methods
Changes to delivery methods may be made at the end of a nine-week grading period with a
two-week advanced written notice. The last day of the third grading period is March 12, 2021. If you would like to change your child's instructional delivery method for the last grading period that begins March 22nd, please complete the "Instructional Delivery Change Request" by March 8th.
Students who wish to participate in remote learning must meet the following criteria:
1. Students must have a grade of 75 or above in all classes in grades 2-12.
2. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade must be reading on grade level.
3. Students must have five (5) or fewer absences in the semester.
Exceptions to criteria for participation in remote learning are:
1. A student is medically fragile or lives with someone who is considered medically
fragile. Documentation from a medical doctor is required and must be submitted
to the school principal.
2. A positive COVID case requires the student to be quarantined in accordance with the
guidelines established by TEA as follows: Any student who has tested positive for
COVID, or who experience the symptoms of COVID, must stay home throughout the
infection period, and cannot return to campus until all three criteria have been met:
● At least one day (24 hours) has passed since recovery (resolution of fever
without the use of fever-reducing medications);
● The individual has improvement in symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of
breath); and
● At least ten days have passed since symptoms first appeared.
3. A student who has had close contact with someone who is COVID positive must be
quarantined for 14 days. The student shall return to in-person learning after the 14-day
quarantine period.
Students who do not meet the qualifications to participate in remote learning must come to school for face-to face instruction.
Spring Fundraising
Students can earn prizes, just like we've done in the past, by selling chocolate to friends and family. The grand prize is the PARTY BUS!! By selling two kits, students will earn a ride on the party bus (socially distancing of course).
Our students have benefitted in the past from our fundraising dollars with the purchase of Chromebook charging carts for every grade level, Dodd House banners that hang in our cafeteria, Science lab materials, books for our literacy library, student rewards and incentives, and supplies for events such as Grandparents' Day and the Dodd fun runs.
Packets will come home on Friday, Feb. 5th with all the details. We hope that you will partner with us in this endeavor!
Spring Benchmark Testing
February 23 Math (4th & 5th grade)
February 24 Reading (4th & 5th grade)
These assessments help us to prepare for STAAR testing by pre-planning our testing groups and locations, practicing procedures, and experiencing what the STAAR test looks like. The results will NOT be used for a grade. They WILL be used to guide our instruction over the next few months. Most of our STAAR tests will be given on-line in May 2021. Students will be able to practice the on-line tools for testing while taking these benchmark tests on-line.
Blanche Dodd Elementary
It is our mission to educate each child through the use of quality instruction and positive relationships. We will strive to motivate each student to discover their unlimited potential and have a positive impact on their community.
