Highlands Elementary School Climbs to Bronze Level Certification

Big picture

Highlands Elementary School is proud to announce that, for the second time in school history, we have received recertification through 2024 as a Bronze Level Sustainable Jersey School.

Mr. Perkins and Mr. Layton, in collaboration with our school's Green Team Committee, worked on this process throughout the 2020-2021 school year. We are all extremely pleased to receive this prestigious designation. Our school's Green Team Committee, which is inclusive of students in grades 4-6, teachers, administration, and members of the BOE, is one of our most rewarding committees. Some future upcoming projects that we are working on include the sponsorship of local Highlands beach clean-up opportunities, applying for grant funding for additional water bottle filling stations, and trying to reduce the use of plastic straws within our school lunch program. In collaboration with the NEHS and their advisor, Miss Lebel, our Osprey Garden is thriving and adding to the lovely facade of our school's main entrance. Thank you to our school community volunteers, Mrs. Stockton, and Mrs. Hablitz for spot-checking and maintaining our beds along with our NEHS students throughout the summer.

HHRS Welcomes Our Newest Admirals

On Tuesday, August 31, 2021, over 100 parents/guardians and students attended the Henry Hudson Regional School 7th Grade Orientation. Mrs. Kingsmore and Mr. Esposito presented to the group along with Chief Burton of the Highlands PD. Peer Mentors led our newest students in icebreaker activities, building tours, and most important lessons on how to open the locks on their lockers. Those present were grateful for the opportunity to meet some teachers, counselors, and CST members in the classrooms as well as Hudson, our therapy dog. This was a very successful program, helping the 7th graders and new students feel comfortable about the new school.

NJDOE requiring all NJ Districts to "START STRONG"

New to the 2021-2022 school year, the New Jersey Department of Education has required the administration of the Start Strong assessments. The Tri-District window will be October 1st - October 22nd, and we anticipate receiving student scores by the end of November. Student scores will include three performance levels, which will inform lesson planning and instruction. These levels are: Strong Support May Be Needed, Some Support May Be Needed, and Less Support May Be Needed. Students in grades 4-10 will be administered the English language arts assessments; students in grades 4-8 and students enrolled in Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 courses will be administered the mathematics assessments; and students in grades 6, 9, and 12 will be administered the science assessments. Start Strong is computer-based, and each subject assessment is 45-60 minutes in length. Information pertaining to Start Strong can be found by reviewing this link content:

Additional assessments to be administered over the course of the school year can be found on each District's website homepage. More specifically, each 2021-2022 District Assessment Calendar will be posted by the first week of September. Should you have any questions regarding Start Strong or other assessments to be administered, please feel free to contact your building Principal or Dr. Baubles in the Office of Curriculum and Instruction at (732) 872-0900 X 2002.
