Fairlawn's Learning Commons

What is a Learning Commons?

  • provides exciting opportunities for students and staff to work together collaboratively
  • students will participate in inquiry centres and imagine, discover and create
  • students will engage in activities that require communication, problem solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
  • based on a cross-curricular approach

FLC Model

Organization

  • 4 or 5 classes will be scheduled each period
  • each classroom teacher will send down up to 5 students
  • each class will have 2 scheduled FLC periods in a 5 day cycle


What will students do in the FLC?

  • return and check in books
  • participate in inquiry centres based on their interests (e.g., Wonder Wall) and classroom learning focuses
  • check out 1 or 2 books of their choice


Day 5's

Classroom teachers may sign out the space for a period or two to bring whole classes down to the FLC for research, group work and/or to work with me.

  • for staff and students
  • access your library account
  • to add our library search for: PDSB Fairlawn P.S.
  • available for download in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for free

Checking In and Out and Resource Requests

Checking In and Out

  • check out all resources using the Self-Serve check out system before removing them from the FLC
  • check in resources that you are returning and place them in the drop box
  • if you need help, ask


Resource Requests

  • email team or individual requests for upcoming units or projects to me
  • requests will be placed in grey buckets with grade level signs written on them
  • buckets will be on the counter right outside my office
  • remember to check out whatever you take

Seasonal/Themed Resources and Books

  • will be placed in buckets with labels on the counter in the Professional Resource room
  • remember to check them out

NEW! Request Bin

If there is a book or a resource that you would like to have in the FLC, please write the title and author on a piece of paper and place it in the green request bin (located on top of the drop box). Please write your name on the requests.

J A Turner Professional Library

If you are looking for a book or resource and we do not have it at Fairlawn, check the Professional Library. You can place books and resources on hold and they will send them directly to our school. If you would like me to show you how to do this, please come see me.
