Message from the Principal
Good Afternoon Dragon Family:
A senior student stopped by my office to visit this week and spoke about their experience with their current internship with a Physical Therapy clinic. I asked him if he was learning from his experience and how the learning was different from his classroom learning experience. He said something that really struck me. He said that he realized learning in a classroom, or from a book, teacher, or computer was very important. But his internship was helping him realize that "real-world" work, particularly work where you provide services to people, requires the ability to solve problems and apply knowledge.
When I think of the four skills students need for 21st Century jobs, maybe jobs that haven't even been invented, I think of the 4 C's: Collaboration, Creativity, Communication, and Critical Thinking. The classrooms and students of the 20th century: lined rows of passive listeners are giving way to small collaborative groups working on robotics, students building sustainable gardens on their school lawn, students building clubs to promote inclusiveness and equity, student leaders creating a system to welcome new students, students learning through inquiry and making their own judgments from learning history.
Transforming learning is hard on teachers. It requires re-training of skills and implementing new teaching strategies that takes time. I'm proud of so many of our teachers who have stepped outside their comfort zones to create new learning opportunities for kids. Helping students become better collaborators, creators, communicators, and critical thinkers will help students be truly prepared for their future. This is the work that matters!
Take a moment and look at the picture below and find ways parents can support learning these important skills at home.
Proud to be a Dragon.

MAP Assessment Update
We are wrapping up our fall MAP assessments for freshman and sophomore Math and English classes. This data provides a snapshot of where students currently are with math and literacy skills. This is valuable data for classroom teachers but also meaningful for parents. This data will allow you to measure your student's progress throughout the year. It will be important to measure fall assessments with our winter assessments. We should expect to see student growth.
We expect to start sending parent reports over the next two weeks so parents will have this data for upcoming Parent/Teacher conferences the first week of October. Please remember currently only Freshman and Sophomore students take the MAP assessments.
I would encourage all parents to watch the brief video I've linked below to better understand the purpose of the MAP assessments. Unlike typical assessments, the MAP assessments provide a level of difficulty of questions based on whether students answer previous questions correctly or incorrectly. The data not only tells us where students stand in regards to their current grade level, but also measures growth over a period of time.

School Safety Update
We have completed all required safety drills for the first semester. However we will continue to conduct both announced and unannounced drills throughout the fall. These drills will be conducted in a manner to minimize disruption to instruction time but to ensure our staff and students understand how to safely and calmly respond in case of an emergency. There are no scheduled drills this week.
I would like to take a moment to remind parents of the availability of our STOPit app. Students can download the app on IPhones or Androids by scanning a Barcode on school posters or simply download the app and enter school access code. Students should come to the front office or counseling office for Access Code. We will review with all students how to access STOPit this week in advisory.
Once students have the app they can report anonymously bullying, dangerous or threatening behavior, hazing, alcohol or drug uses, discrimination, cheating, etc. All reports go directly to me the Principal and are completely anonymous. The app also allows me to communicate with the reporter anonymously and provide immediate help and feedback.
The app works and helps us keep kids safe. I would encourage all parents to read the STOPit Parent FAQ's to learn more about this important school safety feature.
