Linking to Your Child's Canvas Account
Why should I link to my child's Canvas account?
It will allow you to see what your child is working on, you can be notified if they have late or missing assignments and you can also keep track of their scores.
Have your child log into Canvas to find their pairing code. Here are the directions for finding it: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Student-Guide/How-do-I-generate-a-pairing-code-for-an-observer-as-a-student/ta-p/418

The Hero Within (4th Grade ELA)
Where For Art Thou? (5th Grade ELA)
This year the first ELA unit that we will cover is called "Where For Art Thou". In this unit, we will explore many different art-related topics. You will have a chance to learn about the importance of the arts in society, you will learn about different types of art and famous artists. You will also travel back in time and learn about some of the different historical events surrounding the arts. As we begin our journey through this unit please think about how you would define the term "art" and what that term means to you. This definition should change and evolve as we work through this unit. Also, please keep in mind that art can come in many different mediums such as painting, acting, photography, dance, graffiti, poetry, needlework, etc.
Math Quest 4th Grade Math
Students will be working on solving problems using a variety of strategies.
The Six Problem Solving Strategies are:
- Guess and Check
- Draw a Picture
- Make a Table or Chart
- Look for a Pattern
- Work Backwards
- Act It Out
There are 3 levels of this unit. Last year in third grade they used Level A. Now in fourth grade they will use level B, and current fifth graders will use level C later in the year.
Which strategy do you think would be most useful in solving this problem?
There are nine students who wanted a chance to play against each other in checkers. How many games will they have to play so that everyone has a chance to play every other student only once?
Beyond Base Ten (5th Grade Math)
Do you know which base our number system is? Is it Base Two, Base Five, or Base Ten? In 5th grade math, we will be studying about different bases and how the place value system really works. Students will be able to count in different bases, change numbers from one base to another and really explain what place value means. We will be looking at how exponents or "to the power of" helps us understand place value. Check out Khan Academy's website www.khanacademy.org or their app to help you understand different bases and place value.
When counting in different bases we read the digits not by what we normally would call them. For example, 10 is called one zero. Can you count in Base Five? 1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, ??? Do you know what comes next?

3rd Grade Whole Class Services
Normally at the beginning of the year, we begin our thinking skills lessons to prepare for the CogAT. Since we are uncertain of if and when the CogAT may occur we are currently putting 3rd-grade lessons on hold for now. I will be putting together some links for enrichment if your child needs something to keep their mind active after finishing their classwork.
2nd Grade Nurture
Normally we would be doing whole group lessons in each class and then doing some small group pullout. For now, we will be using NearPod lessons created with the PETS curriculum that focuses on thinking skills.
