Indian Creek Elementary - February 2016
Principal's Message
In December we shared some educational websites that we often use at school and that can be utilized at home. This month I want to make you aware of some apps for your smartphone or tablets. These apps provide interactive experiences that challenge students to think and reason.

Valley Forge Day
General Washington's Continental Army of 5th grade Explorers will arrive at Valley Forge on February 26th. Students will experience this unique living history event as they attempt to establish winter encampment in the Indian Creek Outdoor Lab. But this is not a one-man army! General Washington needs many, many parent volunteers to help the troops survive the long, harsh winter. Parents, please enlist by visiting the Valley Forge Day website.
New Staff Spotlight - Barb Hall
Hi! My name is Barbara Hall and I am an Instructional Assistant (IA) for Title I students. Prior to becoming an IA, I was a building substitute in Lawrence Township for 8 years. I taught at Brook Park Elementary for 4 years prior to coming to Indian Creek. Spending time with children is one of my many passions. Teaching children has always been one of my life’s desires. I always enjoy seeing my students, past and present, when I am out and about and they introduce me to their parents and give me a hug. These children are our future!
New Staff Spotlight - Maria Jake
My name is Maria Jake and I am an Instructional Assistant in Ms. Gray's Functional Academics class. I am pleased to be a part of IC! I have worked in Lawrence Township schools for 8 years, starting as a building sub at Winding Ridge. I enjoy working with the students and watching them grow. I have BS degree in Business and worked in banking. I plan to continue studies and stay in the education field.
PLEASE REMEMBER!
If you have changes to your student's dismissal procedures, they must be called into the office prior to 1:30. This will ensure an ample amount of time for the communication to be properly delivered. Also don’t forget that all parent visits with the classroom teacher must be scheduled in advance to avoid interrupting the learning environment. If you would like to schedule a parent teacher conference please contact your classroom teacher directly or call the main office at 964-4400.
Also, please make sure the office is informed if you have any changes to your family's emergency contact information. Thank you!
Box Tops
Thank you for participating in our Box Tops collection last Friday. Together we collected over 6,000 Box Tops and raised over $600 for our school. We will do another Box Tops collection on Friday, February 26. Collection sheets can be found here.

Parent Information and Resource Center
Did you know that there is a Parent Information and Resource Center in our area? The Indiana Partnerships Center located at 911 E. 86th Street, Suite 110 works to empower parents about their rights and responsibilities pertaining to their children’s education in the following ways:
Providing parent-focused workshops that are scheduled by schools, community groups, or parent groups.
Providing education-related information and resource materials, including information about school choice, attendance, tips for parents and teachers talking together, and how to have a family friendly school.
Helping schools develop parent engagement strategies that provide opportunities for parents to become decision-makers in their children's school, resources for school improvement, and mentors to others.
Contact them at 317-205-2595 or on the web at www.fscp.org for more information on how you can become involved!
Watch Us Grow!
In Spring of 2016, our Girl Scout Troop 1605 is going to make a community garden with help of Dads Club and a "Youth as Resources" grant from United Way. Why are we doing this, you wonder? Well, to bring healthy food to people who don't have enough money to buy the good foods they need.
We are going to build 6 beds with vegetables in each one. In the summer the community and Girl Scouts will take good care of the garden by watering the plants, pulling the weeds, and harvesting the ones that are ready. Want to know more? Send a kidmail note to Julia Rabe in Mr. Hardwick’s class, or ask any Indian Creek 4th or 5th grade Girl Scout! Be ready to watch us grow!
