Read Across America Day!
Today we celebrated the joy of reading on Read Across America Day! We celebrated by wearing mix-and-matched clothes, sporting wacky hair, and dressing as our favorite book character! We also participated in a school-wide "Drop Everything and Read" time! We spent the day reading favorite books from home and sharing our favorite stories with friends!

Optional Spelling Practice at Home!
Repeated Sort: Students will sort their words. Then check their words using the answer key. Then sort their words again!
Draw and Label: Students choose 10 of their words. Then they will draw a picture of each world and label it.
Blind Sort: Using given guide words, or headers, students spell or write in words in the correct category as a partner calls each word aloud without showing it.
Writing Sort: Students write their words under the correct category.
Speed Sort: Students sort words quickly under the correct categories (use a timer to see how fast they can do it!) Students love to beat records and to set goals for themselves.
Word Hunt: Students hunt through their own reading and writing for words that are additional examples of the sound, pattern, or meaning unit they study!
Buddy Sort: Using the given headers, students sort their words with a partner, then discuss. They will then check their work with their answer key.
We are Learning
Reading
This week, we talked a lot about how second graders read a lot more in their heads and the voice they use when they read silently matters! They practiced reading pages of their book in their heads several times to make sure that they read them with voice that created meaning for them. They also practiced reading sentences fluently within their text and shared examples with the class.
Writing
Next, we will move onto learning about opinion writing. We will learn that writers may use one, some, or all of the following multiple strategies to persuade their reader act/feel/ or think certain ways (or, in this case, read a book we favor): describe a favorite character, infer character traits from what the illustrations tell us about them, retell a favorite part of the story, or forming their writing based on the estimated level of knowledge their audience may know about the subject (or book).
