The Scoop
Special Services Update - October 3, 2022
Communication, The Scoop & You!
There may be a lot of information in the SCOOP that you are responsible for knowing. We want to limit all the separate group emails, so we condense most of our communication into this newletter for you and for easy reference to go back and find. Please be sure and read each edition of the Scoop carefully and let us know if you have any questions.
Have a great week!
~Keri
Recap of Last Issue:
Be sure and look back if needed for any information on:
- Dyslexia Supplement in the ARD Screens: Please make sure we are completing the Dyslexia Supplement as we complete the Annual and Initial ARD meetings. If the student meets eligibility then the entire supplement should be completed.
Signature Page of ARDs: Please have the parent(s) and administrator sign the document using the mouse or his/her finger. If this option is unavailable due to the device the parent(s) is using, then have the parent(s) sign the document by hand and upload it into Archive Manager. For all other participants (teachers, evaluation staff, CTE rep, etc.) we may state “verbally agreed.” Therefore, every person in attendance must either have a signature or have “verbally agreed” by his/her name.
October is Physical Therapy Month Thank you Whitnee Drake & Cindy Gunn #Wonderful Support #TISDCelebratesPTMonth - #TISDGameChangers
In celebration of Physical Therapy Month, let’s catch our campus teams in the act of “Safe Handling” - . Many paraprofessional staff and special education teachers participated in “Safe Handling” training during the August District Collaborative Day.
Safe Handling is so very important for our campus teams to keep in the forefront of their minds as it is the little things that we do in a day that prevent the “oh my aching back” or the incidences of work related injuries.
Let’s catch Safe Handling in ACTION!
Use Five Key Actions of Safe Handling for additional information on each safe handling action. To provide evidence of “Catching” an action, tweet a picture or a story of what you observed.
Week Of October 3 -7
Challenge: Catch Universal Precautions in Action
Points per Tweet = 1
Max Points per Team = 4
Evaluating Dyslexia in the Full and Individual Evaluation (FIE) Webinar
This webinar describes evaluation procedures for dyslexia as a specific learning disability under federal and state law. New evaluators are encouraged to view this recorded webinar. Veteran evaluators may also want to review this information as a refresher.

One Page Idea Sheet for Options in Implementing Accommodations
All staff members who are responsible for implementing a student's IEP must be informed of their responsibilities related to implementing the student's specific accommodations. But most accommodations can be implemented in more than one way.

CASE FILE: 3rd-grader's progress in math nullifies failure to provide 'pull-out' services - Great Read for problem solving Compensatory Services
Ruling: Although a Maryland district violated the IDEA by failing to provide "pull-out" instruction in math as required by a third-grader's IEP, it did not have to provide compensatory education. The U.S. District Court, District of Maryland upheld an administrative law judge's decision at 121 LRP 24294 that the student's progress in math made the district's procedural violation harmless.

SPECIAL SERVICES SHOUT OUTS!
Jennifer Sewell.- She has gone above and beyond in supporting multiple campuses with behavioral difficulties through direct training, modeling, and coaching. She is such an asset to Tomball ISD and we are so lucky to serve alongside her. Thank you Jenn for always jumping in without hesitation. #TISDGameChangers #Ubuntu
Jessica Oakes & Katrina Thronton: - Thank you for being so accommodating and quickly scheduling revision ARDs so that students are getting AdPE services in place as soon as possible!
Kim Day- One of our fabulous LSSPs, Kim is always available to peer review with her fellow LSSPs. She is efficient, has the student +team's best interest at heart, and makes us laugh with a quick joke. She recently helped me when I was struggling with a re-evaluation because the team is considering dismissing this student from special education. I can count on Kim to give me good advice which includes legal frameworks, ethics, diversity and efficiency.
Kelly Simmons - has been a big supporter of universal access at THS. She shared the CAT tools with some of the THS students and e-mailed me, " Several of the kids who were really struggling with writing (not sped or 504) said this was "lifechanging." Several of the kids are very excited to use them yay!" That is EXACTLY why we are using these tools! Thanks #DestinationExcellence
Jessica Oakes -Thanks for attending our EE meeting to address your campus needs/concerns with the EE Team for the programs at your campus.
Dr. Le - for coming to discuss wrap around services and supports for a student in need!
Dr Garza - for all the AT support she always provides to TMHS!
