The Firebird Flyer
News from Shoreland Elementary - January 2022
From the Principal's Desk...
Dear Firebird Families,
Happy New Year! However, let's be honest, the 2022 year has not started off as we had hoped. Yet, I refuse to let my spirits be dampened or my hope be lost. Why? Because being a Firebird means being part of a family. In this family, we are there for each other.
As I sat in on Zoom lessons today, I watched our staff interact with their students with the same energy, passion and love as if their students were sitting in the classroom. Our mantra this year has been: WE CAN DO HARD THINGS! The important word is WE. Together- families, staff and students will support each other and we will get through the tough times.
I am so grateful to head into this new year with my Firebird family beside me. Your light, your love, and your laughter bring me so much joy and lift me up even on the darkest of days.
With gratitude,
Kimberly A. Dedo, Principal
From Mr. Bott, Associate Principal...
Dear Shoreland Families,
As I walk the halls of Shoreland Elementary, I see students that have grown even during my short time here. All students here at Shoreland have grown academically, emotionally, and socially even during the midst of this pandemic. One of my favorite parts of my job is when I walk around to classrooms and read-aloud student awards in front of their peers. These students have made tremendous strides in their academic progress and overall school behavior. I hope families enjoy seeing those yellow and red awards on their refrigerators. In reality, I could hand out an award to a hundred students daily who choose to come to school and show determination, adaptability, and a learner's mindset. As an educator and parent, I learned that kids are very resilient. I know that our students at Shoreland Elementary will make monumental strides here in the year 2022. I can't wait to see the students surprise us all!

Nurse’s Notes- Communication and COVID-19
We love seeing the students back in the building again after the holiday break. We continue to closely monitor attendance and illness. That being said, it is very important that we all keep the lines of communication open. Feel free to call at any time if you have a question or concern.
Important reminders:
Calling the school when your child is ill
It is imperative that you leave detailed information when calling your child in ill on the attendance line. Please include the child’s name, teacher, and SPECIFIC symptoms/reason for absence (i.e.,fever and runny nose). If your child is absent due to being exposed to COVID, or suspected COVID, please leave a current phone number so we may follow up with you. All information shared is kept confidential.
Updating Infosnap
It is extremely important that we be able to contact you at any time during the school day. Please keep phone numbers updated. Not only yours, but the numbers of emergency contacts also.
Keep your child home if they are sick
Students should not come to school, school activities or attend sports if having any symptoms of COVID-19. The goal is to keep the risk as low as possible and keep school and school activities as safe as possible.
When your child becomes ill at school
If your child reports feeling sick while at school, they will be sent to the nurse or office where they will be quickly assessed and isolated from other students. The parent/guardian will be called and the child will need to be picked up as quickly as possible.
If they are exhibiting COVID like symptoms, the first step is to contact your healthcare provider. The doctor will decide whether to see your child and provide a return to school note or advise COVID testing.
If testing is recommended we will need documentation of the proctored negative result. This can be a hard copy, emailed to your school secretary or chaas@wls4kids.org or send a picture through class dojo to School Nurse Haas.
We are committed to keeping your child in a safe, healthy, and positive environment at school. The students are doing a great job wearing their masks, washing their hands, and social distancing. Please continue to reinforce these safety practices at home.
Sincerely,
Christine Haas RN, BSN
School Nurse
School Closings and Delays Information
School closings and delayed openings will be announced on local radio stations, television stations, and WLS Facebook and Twitter Accounts. Announcements will use the school system's title: Washington Local Schools. The district also has a closing/delay voice mail box, which is activated when a decision is made (usually about 6:00 a.m.). This phone number is 419-473-8499. Please do not call the schools, the Administration Building, the Transportation Department, or the radio and television stations. When schools are closed, school system events that day and evening are automatically canceled.
Baby it's Cold Outside!
With the cold weather upon us, please be sure that your students come to school dressed warmly for outdoor recess. We want students to get outside for recess and get fresh air. Students will go outside if the weather is 19 degrees or above. It is extremely important that students come to school with coats, hats, gloves and, if necessary, boots.
If your child is in need of a winter coat or boots, please call Mrs. Harris, our school counselor, or Mrs. Jacobiak, our school secretary.
Lost and Found
Please take a moment to look through our online photo album. Items will be added as they are found throughout the quarter.
