Shoreland Firebirds' News
From the Principal's Desk...
Dear Shoreland Families,
Read Across America Day, also known as Dr. Seuss Day, is held on the school day that is nearest to Dr. Seuss' birthday of March 2nd. Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American artist, book publisher, animator, poet, a political cartoonist, and author. He is best known for authoring over 60 children's books.
DID YOU KNOW?..................................
- If your child reads just 15 minutes a day, in one year he/she will have read over 1,000,000 words! Statisticbrain.com
- "Reading for pleasure is the single biggest factor in success later in life, outside of an education. Study after study has shown that those children who read for pleasure are the ones who are most likely to fulfil their ambitions. If your child reads, they will succeed- it's that simple." Bali Rai
I truly understand how busy and crazy life can get; however, reading aloud everyday is the SINGLE most important thing you can do to prepare your child to learn. While both of my children are adults, I found reading to and with them each night to be a great stress-reliever for myself and a perfect way for us to end the evening. Please grab a book, or two, and sit down with your child and read.
Stay safe and healthy,

Dear Shoreland Families,
We have made it to March! This school year has been unique, different, and memorable. Students have been asked to learn remotely, stay in their seats, and remain in their zones during recess. Good thing spring is right around the corner and could not come at a better time. The students at Shoreland Elementary are ready to be outside and be active. There are many benefits to our students getting as much outside time.
By encouraging students to spend more time outside and away from digital devices, you’re not only aiding your child’s physical well-being, but you’re helping them improve their emotional and intellectual well-being, too. Taking your student on a trip to the zoo, a walk down the street or a playground visit can provide just the break they need from their screen and add a little sunshine to their day. When I was younger, we use to do a neighborhood scavenger hunt. Try it out and see if you enjoy it one day after school. Just make sure you get your homework done first!
Stay Healthy and Safe!

Ohio State Tests (OST)
Due to an extension in the testing window for the Ohio State Tests (OST), WLS students in grades 3-6 will begin taking the state-mandated tests after spring break (spring break is April 2-11). The Ohio Department of Education dictates the time frame allowed for testing. Students in 4th, 5th and 6th grade will take the electronic version of the tests on their Chromebooks. Our 3rd grade students will be given the paper/pencil version of the tests. We are in the process of devising our testing schedule.
Shoreland's New Facebook Page
Please follow our new Shoreland Elementary - Home of the Firebirds Facebook page. This new page is not replacing the Shoreland Parent Club page but only providing a place where school posts will be made.

SInce 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. During this month, our Firebirds honored the contributions of African Americans to U.S. history. Each morning, students shared an important story regarding a prominent African American during our morning announcements. Students did their own research and shared these individuals' accomplishments to history. Thanks to all of our students who helped educate us, they all did a FANTASTIC job!

NEW Community Flyer Page on District Website
We are excited to announce that we have a new home for community flyers on the district's website! They can now be found by clicking the link below, or by going to the district website and clicking on District > Community Partners > Community Flyers.
This link will be used in place of sending community flyers (YMCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church trunk-or-treats, etc.) home in student's book bags. Any approved WLS flyers will still be sent home with students (anything directly related to or sponsored by WLS), but any community flyers will now be placed on the website instead.
The approval process will remain the same. If you are a group or organization you may email Melissa Cogar, secretary to Brian Davis, Assistant Superintendent, a PDF copy of your flyer. Once approved, she will contact you to let you know it's been approved and that it has been posted on the website.
Washington Local is seeking to hire bus drivers and monitors.
These are great jobs for moms, dads, grandmas, or grandpas who want part time work at full time wages. Weekends, nights, holidays, and summers off.
Immediate openings for contracted positions.
