After our holiday off school, Mrs. Ackenbom's Littles will learn more about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he was such a brave American.
Learning with Mrs. Ackenbom's Littles
We completed PALs reading tests this past week. Early literacy screening is the key to providing effective literacy instruction and preventing future reading problems. The Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) provides a comprehensive assessment of young children's knowledge of the important literacy fundamentals that are predictive of future reading success. PALS is the state-provided screening tool for Virginia's Early Intervention Reading Initiative and is used by 99% of school divisions in the state on a voluntary basis. Data sheets will come home in Tuesday folders to update you on your child's reading level. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about this new information! The PALS website, linked below, gives parents monthly tips and activities to do at home to boost reading skills.

We love math time in Room 2! This week we discussed the number 50 in relation to other numbers and ways to count to 50, combining and subtracting numbers, and playing our own variation of the game "telephone" by saying a math equation and seeing if we have the same true equation at the end of our telephone line! We had a blast this week learning more about numbers and working with one another!
History/Social Science - Past vs. Present
We learned so much this week while investigating the past vs. the present. We read how people long ago made coats for winter during war time when materials were scarce and how families made whipped cream 300 years ago, 200 years ago, 100 years ago and today. Ms. White, the gifted teacher, came into our room and shared with us her collection of whisks and egg beaters. Some were as old as the 1800's and we all tried to spin each one. We even made our own whipped cream and compared which whipped cream we liked the best - one already made in a can and one made from heavy whipping cream and our electric mixer. Of course the one with more sugar won! :} Ms. Dunsmore also visited our classroom to discuss work habits and working with one another in a respectful way. What a great week of learning!

If you are able, please send in things useful for small animals such as cat litter, scratching posts, heating pads, paper towels, bleach, and leashes. We have a donation box outside of our classroom if you would like to drop by and donate or you can send items in with your first grader. Thanks so much in advance for your support!
