Student Writers Unite
RCSHS and RCMS Students Participate in Writers Workshop
April 23, 2014 - Our First Meeting
The 8th graders are creating their first ever literary magazine and the 7th graders are writing fanfiction pieces. The high school students visited to help them fine tune their writing, offering suggestions regarding sentence structure, character development, tone, voice, and of course grammar and punctuation.
During the writing workshop the conversations were a true testament to the skills the students of RCSHS possess. I overheard the students discuss poetry line breaks, imagery, word choice, character development, grammar rules, theme, and conflict. This exercise allowed both students to take on so many roles: a writer, a listener, a reader, an editor, a student, and a teacher.
The high school students not only offered writing suggestions they also shared their own struggles with writing. The middle and high school students alike appreciated being in the company of other writers. The juniors encouraged the middle school students to continue to write on outside of the classroom and voiced how important writing was to college and career readiness.
At the end of the session the high school students praised the writing talents of the middle school students and invited them to share their works at community writing events such as poetry night at Coffee Tree Books, a locate book store, May 8th @ 5:30 p.m.
May 1, 2014 - Our 2nd Meeting - The Juniors share a Writing Activity
Needless to say the students were inspired and as soon as the activity was over they began composing their poems. As you can see from the photo below students were quick to share their insights and writing. The exercise allowed the high school students to showcase their skills and the middle schools students were very receptive to their comments.
