Enrollment Report
Secretary Ewanio commented that it's amazing we can gain 58 new students from the beginning of the school year until the end.
Board Business
- The BOE will seek applications for a Board of Education vacancy (seat vacated by Ana Ultras who moved out of district.)
- The notice will be posted on the SD81 website.
- Since there is no meeting in July, special meetings will be held in the summer to interview and fill the vacancy.
- They will proceed as a whole board to conduct interviews, etc., not in a committee.
-Triple I Conference
Members can sign up for the conference. Member Downs inquired about the possibility of attending the national conference rather than the regional conference. President Desecki stated that the national conference was very good. It is in April in Orlando. Members can choose to attend either the regional or the national conference.
Old Business Information
Washington School:
- The old school is gone, and the basement is coming out.
- Member Ewanio remarked that she loves the new building, especially how colorful the new glazed tile is.
- Member Downs shared that a resident expressed how much she loved Kennedy School, as her grandchildren are students. Remarks on how nice SD81 facilities are were also shared.
- Washington School brightens up the street; Dr. Boryszewski commented that the residents view is improved, with a view of an open area and park.
- Lincoln Stormwater/Field Construction: Making progress on the field; have the concrete storm structures in place, and all dug out. It will be a turf field.
- Kennedy Courtyard: Progress is being made, with the landscape dug out and the area prepped for footings, etc.
- Lincoln Curtainwall Construction: The old curtain wall has been removed. It is being repaired so it will no longer leak.
New Business Information
- School principals presented MAP student achievement data:
- The students' progress from fall to spring is something to be proud of.
- 2nd graders showed significant gains in the number of students meeting their target RIT scores, which is impressive, given that their 1st grade year (an important instructional year for obtaining foundational skills) was challenging, pivoting back and forth between remote and in-person instruction.
- SD81 students made more progress than MAP expected, and compared to normative data across the nation.
- We are seeing growth across all grade levels; changing strategies to focus on meeting students where they are and grouping has made a difference to address the learning loss created by the pandemic.
- Dr. Boryszewski explained that this growth applies to all students. Teachers were asked to think about instruction in a way they never had before, and at the end of the year, they realized their efforts worked. As teachers continue to differentiate for all learners, including those who are above grade level, we will continue to see growth.
- Secretary Ewanio commented that the growth is phenomenal, especially coming out of the COVID years. She recollected that the Board had expressed concerns about the transition years of 4th and 6th grade, which are challenging years for students, in terms of content and the MAP assessment, but clearly the teaching strategies are working. The achievement data is a celebration for not only students, but also teachers.
