STEM Day at Marian University
--- --- --- --- ---
Girls in Engineering and Medical Science (GEMS) Day at Marian University is designed to get girls in grades 4-8 (or Juniors and Cadettes in Girl Scouts) interested in these STEM fields. I'm particularly proud of this collaboration between Marian and Girl Scouts of Central Indiana in an effort to show young girls that there are some really cool fields for them to pursue, especially in STEM fields.
Marian University staff will be welcoming attendees to campus for a day of tours through their Simulation Lab in College of Osteopathic Medicine and Leighton School of Nursing to show how to diagnose patients for different medical procedures (it looks like a real life Operation game... so cool!!), as well as joining a group of female engineers to troubleshoot actual projects they are working on in the E.S. Witcher School of Engineering, and last, but certainly not least, they will immerse themselves in the EcoLab, which is an outdoor laboratory to study plant and animal life.
Tours of campus, as well as all you can eat lunch is provided in the fee, so it's a really great opportunity to show girls not only cool STEM fields, but also the possibilities that are out there at post-secondary institutions.
Here is the link to register for the event. And if there is a girl that isn't a Girl Scout? Not a problem! We welcome them as well!

What are Intervention Periods?
School schedules are busy, requiring administrators, teachers, and parents to find time to increase student achievement and support struggling students. Intervention periods offer unique benefits such as targeted support, identifying students for accommodations, building rapport, promoting student voice, monitoring progress, improving skills in a low-stakes environment, and providing teachers extra time to fill learning gaps.
In order for our students to receive additional instruction without interfering with the core curriculum, our intervention period takes place during homeroom (8:00–8:30) at the beginning of the day. To make them most effective, students are moved from their "normal" homeroom for the weeks that they are pulled so as to maximize the time. While direct instruction and support are provided on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the intervention period is essentially a "class" that meets during the school day where students can receive targeted academic support, gain confidence, and overcome current challenges.
---
How are Intervention Period students identified? The iReady diagnostic is our primary means of identifying students. Both the English and Math diagnostic tests are able to show students' proficiency in a variety of topics (for example, the math test identifies students' proficiency in Number and Operations, Algebra and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, and Geometry). Our MS teachers design intervention “rounds” to be 4-6 weeks in length, and pull students who have gaps in specific areas to target those gaps in knowledge and, in the end, accelerate those students' learning in that area. Students who are identified for Intervention Periods are straight A students, students who struggle with missing work, athletes, special education recipients…you name it! What they all share is a gap in proficiency in a particular area, and teachers who want to close that gap in a targeted way!
