What Are Our Church Values?
“When your values are clear to you, making decisions becomes easier.”
--Roy Disney, brother to Walt Disney and co-founder of the Disney empire
Values are important. Our personal values guide what we do and say and where we spend our time and money. For example, if we value family connections, we prioritize our time and money to have “family time.” If we value athletic achievement, we prioritize our time and money practicing sports we love and learning new ways to train and play. If we value spiritual growth, then we prioritize discipleship in our daily life. Values drive our decision to say yes and no to things in our life.
If we are not clear about our values, then, trust me, our values are clearly seen by others. To quote the famous singer, Elvis Presley, “Values are like fingerprints. Nobody’s are the necessarily the same but you leave them all over everything you do.” When we are not clear about our values, confusion can take place. We may lose focus in our lives. Jesus’ suggests that “where your treasure is there your heart is also.” Look at your monthly budget to see what you value in your life. Are you happy with that?
Values are also in churches, but sometimes we are not clear about them. We certainly value Jesus Christ, his teachings, and gift of salvation. However, what do we emphasize about him in our church? When we are clear about our church values, then those who are yet to come will understand what they are joining when they visit and grow with us.
This year for charge conference, our District Superintendent, Rev. Quincy Brown, asked us to clarify our church’s values as part of our report. All churches in the district are producing a values report as well. This church values assessment will help us find out why we do the ministries we do and don’t attempt others. It will also help us take a step forward in developing a new vision of what we want to look like in the next 5 years. Be watching your email and the church bulletin for the church values worksheet. We’ll be compiling your answers and produce a report at our November 11th charge conference.
Peace,
