NEWS FROM THE CORRAL
January 10, 2016
Good Evening Pony Parents,
The beginning of the new semester has arrived. We hope you enjoyed time with family and friends and are geared up for a swift spring semester. It does seem ironic that we call this our "spring" semester when we know there will be winter weather at some point!
Report cards were sent home with students on Thursday so please make certain you have received the results of the fall performance. As always if you have questions or concerns teachers are available to help.
Teachers of the Month for December were chosen by their peers: Natalie Ledbetter, Art Teacher, Katy Smith, AVID teacher, and Christy Finlay, paraprofessional were selected for December. Please visit the link for pictures. Teachers of the Month for December
Thank you for your support as we work as a team to produce strong levels of student engagement as well as our leaders of tomorrow.
Have a great week!

GMS Counseling Department Receives Prestigious CREST Award
CREST stands for Counselors Reinforcing Excellence for Students in Texas. Schools receiving CREST awards have demonstrated a commitment using the school guidance and counseling program to improve the lives and achievement of students in academic, career, and personal social domains. The Texas School Counseling Association is proud Grapevine Middle School is awarded this designation for 2015.
CREST looks at the counseling program in 7 areas: Principal’s Support, School Counseling Advisory Council, School Climate and Safety, Student Results, Major Achievements, Community Partnerships and Resources, and Parent Collaboration. The guidance support team prepares a document that highlights these areas and communicates just what the counseling program is doing to help students succeed. These documents are sent to reviewers throughout the state of Texas to be judged according to pre-set standards of excellence.
Congratulations to GMS for being one of a group of only 91 schools from across the state to win the CREST Award for Counseling Excellence for 2015.
Robotics Team Receives Donation
Lu Adkins, one of our Robotics Team Sponsors, woke up to a fantastic surprise concerning her EV3 Robot Donorschoose.org project. It needed over $680 and was due in January. She thought there was no way to fund it by then. To her surprise a former GHS graduate and now NFL player funded it for GMS. Henry Melton, now with the Tampa Bay Bucs funded the project and wished us Happy Holidays. You can view the information and picture of the robot at the following link! Thank you Mr. Melton for continuing to support GCISD prepare our students for the future!

Looking Ahead for STEM
When Cannon Elementary became the district’s first STEM program for the 2013-2014 school year, it served students in grades kindergarten through fifth-grade. Seeing the need to continue this focused STEM instruction, the district expanded the program into Grapevine Middle School in the Fall of 2014. The program at GMS now includes students in sixth and seventh grade, and in August 2016 it will extend to eighth-grade. Currently, the district’s STEM program stops at the middle school level; however, campus and district leaders are looking ahead to the future and beginning in the Spring 2016, staff at Grapevine High School will begin professional development with the aim of offering specialized STEM instruction for ninth-grade students in the Fall of 2017. The decision to locate the high school STEM program at GHS was made after considering the curricular resources already in place at the GCISD Technology Education and Career Center, which currently serves both Colleyville Heritage and GHS students. As with the program at Grapevine Middle School, the STEM Academy will continue to progress each year with students, eventually becoming a kindergarten through twelfth-grade initiative. While the district and Grapevine High School are very early in the planning stages, we wanted to let our STEM families know that the district is looking ahead and we are excited for the opportunity this will present for our students. We will continue to update you throughout the next year as we continue to grow the STEM program in GCISD.
