Cedar Reader Remote Learning
Cedar Park Middle School - April 9, 2020
Message From the Principal
Hello Cedar Park Families.
I hope you're all doing well and staying safe. What a crazy time this is!
I have to tell you that when Governor Brown announced the school closure for the remainder of the school year, I was not surprised, but I broke down. While learning how to be an online principal has been a huge challenge, the emotional toll of not being at school and working with the staff and students is dramatic. I know this time is hard for everyone, especially our students and families.
Teachers are working endless hours developing material and learning a "new normal" for delivering instruction that is engaging. Phase 3 of Remote Learning begins next week, and I know you all have many questions. I will try to answer them now.
What are office hours?
The purpose of office hours/individual/small group instruction is to provide your student more support academically and emotionally, if needed. Office hours/individual/small group instruction are intended to be small groups by nature, but it is possible that there could be one on one interactions via Zoom, Google chat, or email. Office hours are NOT required for students to attend; it is a time for students to have access to their teachers for questions and support. Teachers are required to host 60 minutes of office hours each day.
Will all teachers use Zoom or hold synchronous learning sessions?
No. Teachers have been instructed that all learning needs to accessible asynchronously, as not every student can access lessons at the same time. We know every household is different, and we need to be equitable in our expectations for student engagement.
How will I know what the work for the week is?
I will be sending a Cedar Reader by 9:00 AM every Monday morning. The Cedar Reader will have links to every teacher's online platform, assignments, resources, information from the school, etc. We are doing it this way so you are not overwhelmed with tons of email from several people. We hope this is a one-stop place for you and your student to access all the information you need for the week. Students and parents will receive the Cedar Reader in an email. Please direct your student to check her/his BSD email.
I want my student to be doing more work than is being provided.
The district guidance to teachers about the work and learning provided is based on the understanding that every family looks different and has different needs, so we cannot expect that students will be sitting at a computer for 6-7 hours a day. If you would like to supplement what is being provided by your student's teachers, please use the online resources that are updated consistently.
What about all the stuff my child left in her/his locker?
At this time, we are only able to accommodate technology, instrument, and medication pickup requests. We are working with the district to develop a plan to get other items left at school for pickup.
I have questions that didn't get addressed here. Whom do I contact?
Please use the following list of general topics and contacts to guide your questions to the right person.
Technology questions: shd@beaverton.k12.or.us
Questions about Canvas: Linda_Peterson@beaverton.k12.or.us
Questions about specific classes: Contact your student's teacher directly
Administrative questions: follow this link to the Contact Us form
Finally, thank you for your patience, flexibility, and understanding as we work through some kinks these next few weeks. We all want to do what is best for our students and families, and things are changing on a daily basis.
Need to Pickup Your Student's Chromebook, Instrument, or Medication?
We have a few staff who are on hand to help on Wednesday, April 15th from 10 am - 12 pm.
If you need to pick up technology, an instrument, or medication, please email jennifer_adishian@beaverton.k12.or.us to let her know the following information:
Student Name
Needed Item
Is it in a locker? If so, what is the locker number?
What time between 10 AM and 12 PM will you be at school to pick up the items? (Items will be left on a table at the front of the building at your scheduled time to maintain social distancing.)
Students and parents will not be allowed to enter the building.
At this time, we are only able to accommodate technology, instrument, and medication requests. We are working with the district to develop a plan to get other items left at school for pickup.
