Mukwonago Moves - Spring
Get Active - Eat Healthy - Move Often!
PEP GRANT HIGHLIGHTS FOR YEAR II
The Success CONTINUES! Year Two of the Mukwonago Area School District Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant continues into the 2015-16 school year. The PEP Grant moves forward with programming to support the Department of Education PEP Grant objectives as we implement comprehensive, standards-based, integrated physical activity and nutrition programs in schools. Through our new programs, we expect our students will develop greater appreciation for lifelong healthy nutrition and physical fitness habits.
In Year #1, we gained strength in our health-related fitness scores, as 82% of our students scored in the healthy fitness zone, with improved scores on all fitness tests as the year rolled forward. We will continue our progress in 2015-16 with our spring testing as we will address daily activity goals and improvements in healthy eating. The PEP Program goals for the Mukwonago Area School District (MASD MOVES Project) include the following components for 2015-16. We focused on six major areas for Year Two of the PEP Grant.
1. Technology in Physical Education
2. Nutrition Education with the Five for Life program
3. Student Activity Monitoring
4. Intentional Fitness
5. Curriculum alignment with State and National Physical Education Standards
6. Lifetime fitness

WELNET SOFTWARE IMPROVES STUDENT FITNESS TRACKING
As a part of our PEP Grant objectives, student progress in physical education that documents proficiency in identified fitness and motor skills, and academic fitness can now be documented and recorded in WELNET, a Focused Fitness activity database storage program for written testing, fitness data collection, assessment, motor skill tracking and student portfolios. WELNET is the data base physical education teachers will use to confirm their performance benchmarks for their Student Learning Objectives and Personal Performance Goals which connects directly to our state’s Educator Effectiveness Program as well as our teacher evaluation component for the PEP grant evaluation.

TASTE TESTING AS A PART OF PEP NUTRITION GOALS
Student taste tests are showing up in our school cafeterias as a part of the joined health and wellness goals between the MASD Physical Education Department and Food Services Department. The PEP project also includes common goals developed during staff development, including nutrition guidelines that will follow the USDA Healthier US School Challenge and Focused Fitness - Five for Life programs. The PE teachers worked in connection with the MASD Food Service Program to provide fruit and vegetable “taste tests” to expose students to more fruit and vegetable varieties. Kohlrabi was introduced at Park View Middle School and MHS during the lunch hours. Students voted YES, they would like to see crunchy kohlrabi on the salad bar line.

INTENTIONAL FITNESS
What is intentional fitness in physical education? Intentional fitness includes exercises and activities designed specifically to improve one or more of the five components of fitness. Those five components are:
- cardiovascular endurance
- muscular strength
- flexibility
- muscular endurance
- body composition.
Through regular testing, monitored fitness plans, and goal setting, students can see improvements through intentional fitness in our programs. The use of functional equipment ( stability balls, hand weights, resistance bands...) and student workouts in the MHS and PVMS fitness centers will provide for greater personal goal setting and monitoring. Students will be evaluated using the FITNESSGRAM assessment, 3DPAR, and physical fitness logs. The PVMS fitness center is up and running this year, allowing for middle school students to focus on intentional fitness goals for a smoother scope and progression as they move into the high school program. A before-school program is being addressed as an option for more student activity. Students who are interested in becoming more physically fit or reaching their fitness goals will have a greater chance to complete that in school.
CORE 4+ IN THE NEWS AGAIN!
Core 4+ is a set of four school-related strategies to increase student physical activity. The strategies are
1. Active Minutes of Physical Activity…like in physical education class…we’ll let Mr. Korth, Mr. Werth and Ms. Uecker handle that one.
2. Active recess – we need a push to get our students outdoors at lunchtime.
3. Active before and after school activities through programs like Wednesday Morning Wake-up, FCA+A, and the fitness center, and our sport programs
4. And here’s where you all come in to play – Active classrooms!
These four programs make up the CORE 4
5. And the + …..That’s getting our families and community involved in more physical activity. That's where parents come in! How can you provide more activity for your children? Try these tips:
1. Lead by example....and have your children help motivate you with activity.
2. Limit screen time.
3. Introduce them to fitness APPs and online training websites.
4. Get outdoors! Get your exercise and fresh air all in one dose.
5. Find out what your child is interested in and help them join a team or activity group.
6. Make household chores a family activity time with a reward when tasks are done.
7. Buy your children exercise gadgets and toys like a Frisbee, jump rope and resistance band. Functional fitness equipment is low cost, easy to use and develops results fast.
8. Make a family calendar and schedule regular activity dates.
9. Shop, plan, prepare and eat family meals together.
