What Happened?
Oliver Brown and twelve other black parents were recruited by the local NAACP chapter to sue for an end to segregated elementary schools in Topeka, Kansas (Brown v. Board of Education). Though there was a white school seven blocks from her home, Brown's daughter, Linda, had to walk through a dangerous railroad switching yard to reach her bus stop for a thirty minute ride to school.
