LAKELAND HIGH SCHOOL
October 2019
The mission of Lakeland High School is to empower students to develop their individual potential by acquiring the knowledge, skills, and values needed to contribute to a healthy, productive community.
October Highlights!
We are continuing to strive to empower our students to understand how they can become their own teachers. Our teachers are coming alongside our students to help them understand how to climb out of the "learning pit" by being able to answer the question; What do I do when I don't know what to do? LHS wants all of our students to develop high levels of self-efficacy, which simply means they are resourceful, resilient, motivated, balanced, and confident in their own skills to navigate life and reach their goals. It is fun to see the satisfaction in our students when they learn at a higher level then they thought possible. Go Hawks!

STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Name: Mike Dunn
Position: English teacher Years at LHS: First year
What do you like most about LHS? LHS is such an amazing school. The staff and the kids are fantastic, and there is a great commitment to education from everyone Students and teachers do not like to settle for just being “OK” -- there is a visible commitment toward striving to be exemplary in academics, athletics, and school culture. Not to mention, Rathdrum is a great community, and everyone has been extremely welcoming to my family and me since we moved here.
What are your interests/hobbies outside of work? I love hiking, camping and photography. I have been to 21 different national parks, and my goal is to hit every single one. I took a lot of time this summer to take photos and to hike around Rathdrum, and I am blown away with the great recreational opportunities and views that are here. I am also a huge football fan, and I religiously follow my alma mater, University of Wyoming, and its football team (Go Pokes!). I love watching baseball, especially my Seattle Mariners.
Tell about your family: I married my beautiful wife, Kayla, in 2015. She is a second-grade teacher at Mullan Trail Elementary and the most caring person in the world. We have a perfect baby girl, Taylor, who is almost 14-months old, and she has recently become quite the walker! Everyone in my immediate family is a teacher, and I am the third generation of Dunns to become a teacher and a football coach.
What else about you is interesting or would you like to share? *Maybe you’re working on a special project. I coached freshman football for the first time this year, and I had a blast. I am hoping to coach more sports at the high school, as well. I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of Wyoming, and recently completed my masters from Whitworth University. Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a journalist and a sports photographer.
