Charles Ellis Montessori Academy, October 25, 2021
As we enter a cultural season when goblins and ghouls become the decor of choice, I invite you to consider the differences, Dr. Montessori exposed between fantasy and imagination. The article linked below can provide some insight. When children are anchored in a tangible reality they have a foundation upon which to build their creativity. Have fun this season and also take those wonder walks in nature and let your child's imagination soar with the Red-tailed Hawk, plunge into the depths with the dolphins on Tybee, or scurry along logs with the lizards at Skidaway State Park.

The Charles Ellis Montessori Academy PTA is thrilled to announce that we will be sponsoring our 10th Annual Read-A-Thon for our students during the month of November.
All proceeds from the Read-A-Thon will directly support our school. This year, we will be raising funds to purchase updated Montessori Materials that will be circulated through the media center for classroom use.
Not only will the funds benefit our school, but students will also enjoy time reading (and it is something that can be done as a family). We hope the time your family spends participating in this Read-A-Thon will encourage a love of reading and time spent together supporting a good cause.
Students will be receiving a reading log (also attached below) early next week to track their reading and also to request pledges. Pledges/donations should be submitted to the PTA Read-A-Thon Memberhub website (http://app.memberhub.gives/4ae9be).
Any student, who raises $100 or more, will receive a $10.00 gift certificate to the Scholastic Book Fair in the media center, which will take place December 6-10, 2021.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Ms. Lisa (email@example.com).
This week, we met with Kindergarten on Friday. We talked all about the life cycle of pumpkins by reading an eBook on Epic! called "Little Pumpkin." We also did some yoga where we pretended to be a seed, sprout, vine, flower, and finally a grown pumpkin. Lastly, we got to see some pictures of book character pumpkins that students have brought to the media center in past years so that we could get excited about the upcoming "Book Character Pumpkin Patch" (see information about that below).
Book Character Pumpkin Patch:
We will be holding our annual "Book Character Pumpkin Patch" the week of October 25-29th.
Students are encouraged to decorate a real or fake pumpkin as a favorite book character to bring to the media center on Monday, October 25th to share with our school community (No scary or carved pumpkins, please!).
Teachers may sign up for a time to bring their class through the media center to view the pumpkins. Ms. Lisa will photograph all the pumpkins on display and she will post them on the Ellis MC Facebook page.
Students will pick up their pumpkins from the media center on Friday, October 29th, to take home.
We look forward to seeing our student's CREATIVITY in this favorite Ellis tradition.
If you have any questions, please let us know.

This week in school counseling instruction, Ms. Rebecca and school counseling intern, Mr. Wes, met with Upper Elementary classes for a lesson on Empathy. We learned what it means to put ourselves in others' shoes, and how we can practice being more empathetic in our daily lives.
For extra support, peer mediation conflict resolution, or any resources, including Backpack Buddies free food for the weekends, please reach out to our School Counseling Department. Resources are available on the School Counseling Website including a list of mental health professionals in the Savannah area.

Update 10/5/21: The district has provided the COVID-19 Flowchart pictured below. For future reference, you may find this image on the Nurse's page of the Ellis website.
Nurse Chris' email address has changed to firstname.lastname@example.org
If your child is (or will be) absent for any reason, please email your child's teacher AND copy Nurse Chris on the email.
If your student is classified as a "Close Contact" with someone who has COVID-19 at school, you will receive a phone call from someone on the Ellis Contact Tracing team to pick them up immediately. When you pick up your student, you will be provided with a letter from Nurse Chris outlining further instructions including when your student will be allowed to return to the building. You can view that letter template on the Nurse's page of the Ellis school website for your future reference. It is also listed in the updated Ellis Family Handbook.
Devices Brought to School Daily
Students must also have their own set of earbuds/headphones. We cannot share these items among students for hygiene reasons.
If you would like your student to keep their device at school, please contact your student's teacher to arrange that.
Thank you for your help with teaching our students to be responsible for their school materials.
