School Recess!
By Emma Gerhart
Let’s talk about recess! Here's some questions to think about:
Do you like the monkey bars? Do you go to recess before or after lunch? Do you play basketball at recess? Do you play on the swings? Where do you go for recess when the weather is bad? Do you play with the hula hoops at recess? Do you like doing gymnastics at recess? Do you play with a lot of friends at recess? Do you like to play games at recess? Would you ever like to stay in for recess? Do you like the blue monster? Did you ever write a book about recess? Do you get blisters from the monkey bars at recess? Can you do the monkey bars?
Recess is very fun and exciting! Don’t you ever wonder what you are going to do at recess? I like recess, don’t you?
Just kidding! I love recess, don’t you?
Ink-readible Writers Win 1st Place!
Mrs. Dweck was chatting with Ibi Alao, a United Nations Ambassador of Peace, and thought about the idea of writing a book. When she found out about a contest from Scholastic Book Fairs, she and Mr. Weimann assembled a team of ten third grade students. Mrs. Dweck got Mr. Alao to visit Willow Lane and tell his story. The club of writers, known as "The Ink-Readible Writers," listened. The students worked on the pictures first, then they did all the writing. They used colored and cut construction paper to make the pictures. The words were typed on the computer. When the authors were done, they submitted their book into Scholastic Books.
The student authors were put in a Kids Are Authors competition. They won first place. The next school year, the whole school had an assembly all about Ibi. First, some students did African dance. Then Dr. Moyer gave out the awards to the authors. He gave everyone a medal and a certificate. Dr Moyer and people from Scholastic Books commented on how well they did. This achievement left the student authors feeling very happy.

Willow Lane Has Some New Teachers!
Mr. Hensinger Interview
By Husrit Grewal and Jayden Green
Hi Willow Lane Elementary School! This is Hush and Jayden! Guess what!? We just interviewed Mr. Hensinger, the new 4th grade teacher here at Willow Lane!
Do you ever wonder why Mr. Hensinger started teaching? He grew up in a large family. The effect that this had on him is that he is good at working with kids. Also, Mr. Meyers (a 2nd grade teacher at Willow Lane) let Mr. Hensinger read to his students and that’s when he realized he wanted to teach. Mr. Hensinger wanted to teach because he wanted to help other people. Finally, he has been teaching for 6 years in total.
We also asked Mr. Hensinger when he planned to stop teaching and he said “When I’m in the ground”. This means when he is nonliving any more.
Did you know that Mr. Hensinger’s favorite subject is social studies? The part of history that he loves the most is the American Revolution.
Mr. Hensinger has no kids but a wife named Melissa. They have a dog that is a Glen of Imaal Terrier. Mr. Hensinger loves Marvel and Star Wars. His favorite color is blue and his favorite candy is 3 Musketeers. Some other favorite things of Mr. Hensinger is that his favorite book is The Lorax. Finally, Mr. Hensinger’s favorite animals are penguins and dogs.
This was our report on Mr. Hensinger, the new 4th grade teacher that has joined us this year in Willow Lane Elementary School we hoped you learned more about him.
Ms. Weller Interview
By Alyssa Chu and Lacey Edwards
We interviewed Ms. Weller, the new librarian and here is what they learned...
Lacey’s Introduction - Ms. Weller isn't any ordinary kind of teacher, she’s a library teacher! Last year, our previous librarian retired. Mrs. Newton, last year’s librarian, played a great part in the school! Now, our new library teacher, Ms. Weller, will too!
Alyssa’s Introduction - As far as I know from being in Ms. Weller’s class, she is a great library teacher. I used to go to Wescosville and so that means that I don’t know what the library was like at Willow Lane last year. If I did know then, I would probably compare last year to this year. However, even if I could compare, I bet that I would still like library class.
We had a chance to sit down and interview Ms. Weller. We had a great time and that we got a lot of good details about Ms. Weller.
1. What made you want to become a library teacher?
“I love working with students and I love reading books. I think that reading is an essential skill for everyone to have and I want to inspire an excitement for it in children. When I decided to become a teacher, a library teacher just felt right.”
2. Have you ever been a library teacher before and what school did you teach at?
“I was at Moravian Academy in Bethlehem for six years. Most recently, I was at an elementary school in Millville, New Jersey.”
3. Do you like teaching here and why?
“I do! I love teaching here. The students are very excited and love to learn. Plus the other teachers have been very nice and supportive.”
4. Do you like kids and why?
“I love working with kids because they are always looking for adventure and excitement as they learn. I hope that to bring them some of that through books.”
5. When did you learn about Media Studies?
“Before I became a teacher, I went to school for Media Studies. I went to a college near Chicago. While I was there, I studied journalism, video editing, and radio broadcasting!”
Mrs. Sakelarides Interview
By Brooke Floczak, Avary Biggs, and Jayden Green
Hi! This is Brooke, Avary, and Jayden and we interviewed Mrs. Sakelarides.
Here are a few things that we learned about Mrs. Sakelarides.
We asked her what she does here at Willow Lane Elementary School. She said, “ I work with students to help them in the subjects they struggle with."
After that, we asked her how long has she been working in schools. She replied, “13 years but at a different school, Saucon Valley.’’ She also told us that she had taught 5th grade.
Here are a few of her favorite things:
Song - Don’t Stop Believing
Food - Pizza and Ice Cream
Book - Number the Stars
Animal - Giraffe
Color - Purple
Movie - Legally Blond
Sport - Football
New SWPBIS Behavior
By Sophia Baker and Abbey Thomas
The SWPBIS Behavior Program is something new that is happening in our school. Our new motto is having respect, acting responsibly, working hard, and keeping safe. We are doing this to encourage kids to have that kind of behavior. Each month, the specialist teachers are handing out awards such as the Silver Sneaker, the Silver Paintbrush, the Silver Book, and the Silver Clef! Do you notice a pattern? These awards are given to the class with the overall best behavior. The awards kind of look like trophies. The cafeteria even has a Silver Tray Award. We sure hope that our classes win one of these this school year.
We also earn hawk tickets. The blue ones are worth one, the green, yellow, and pink ones are worth two. Well, the green ones are given out by lunch helpers, the blue ones are given out by regular teachers, the pink tickets are given out by substitutes, and the yellow tickets are given out by bus drivers.
I bet you want to know what they're for right? There is a cart that goes around and you can redeem tickets for various prizes. Some of the things are pencils, pens, keychains and bookmarks. These things are items you can take along with you. However, there are many prizes that cost a lot of tickets like for 100 tickets you can have extra recess with a friend. And also for 50 tickets you can have extra computer time. This is quite different from what we used to do with our blue tickets from last year. Previously when earned, students put them into their grade level bin. At the assemblies, Miss Pilsits or Dr. Moyer pulled out names. If you were chosen, you had lunch with Miss Pilsits and/or Dr.Moyer. In order to remind us about our Hawk Behavior, there are posters hanging in all classrooms, and we recite this pledge daily after the Pledge of Allegiance each morning. Kids at our school love this program. Hopefully you do too!!
Compare and Contrast Between My Old School and Willow Lane
Olivia Ditty
Before I came to Willow Lane I was in another school, and it was down in Philadelphia. My school was called Stephen Decatur. In my other school I had to wear a uniform, the old school that I went to I had to wear a blue top and a pair of tan pants.
But in Willow Lane we don’t. I like to pick my own clothes because I don’t have to match like my whole school. Another difference between schools are the grades that attend. At Decatur there were children from Kindergarten to 8th grade all at the one school. But here, the grades are broken into three different schools:K-5 is Elementary, wich my twin brother and I go to ,6-8 is Middle School, which I have a sister in, and 9-12 is High School, which I have another sister in. In this school there is air conditioning, but Decatur was an old building and didn’t have air conditioning, just windows and fans that didn’t cool anybody off. There are same amount of floors in both school, there are three.
What is similarities between your previous school and Willow?
At Decatur we ate lunch, obviously, But it was a little different from Willow Lane. At Decatur we didn't have to pack lunch we could just go in a line that gave you lunch ,you didn’t have to buy it and they would just search up your name.
Differences
At Decatur we had more homework, less time of recess and to eat lunch.

3.What do presidents say in the debate?
In presidential debates, the candidates of presidency talk about what he/she thinks about important issues of the US and what policies he/she will implement when he/she will become president. They talk about plans on keeping US safe from terrorism, improving economy of the US, Health care policy, immigration, foreign policy, gun policy, etc.Storyworks Magazines
By Carina McCallum
Have you ever heard of “ Storyworks”? If it sounds familiar, you’ve probably worked with it before or maybe you’ve done a project with it. Story Works is a bit like a newspaper. Its full of information.
Why Have Storyworks?
Storyworks is very important information-giving magazine. It might have writing pieces on history. For example, they might have information on the Titanic. Storyworks, also might have biographies on people. Storyworks has articles that kids can understand, while if a child reads an article from an adult newspaper there might be big confusing words that kids might not understand. Storyworks gets a message across in a child-appropriate way.
Storyworks Has More To Offer!
Storyworks is more than just a magazine. Storyworks has a website with lots of things, like follow-ups on articles, interviews of the columnists, worksheets for articles, and even a comic strip called “The Word Nerd”! Storyworks magazine worksheets have many options. They may have things that have paragraph preparation or a quiz on an article.
Storyworks magazines are great resources that kids are lucky to have. Teachers can use them to help with a lesson, and kids can just read them for fun. Reading Storyworks can improve your writing and expand your vocabulary! You should read Storyworks now!

Willow Lane's Newest Fundraiser
Boosterthon was started in 2001. Willow Lane Elementary for the first time took part in Boosterthon this year. Boosterthon can help students raise funds for their school! Parents can register their students and track their progress during the fundraising events. Families/friends can pledge money for students for fun run. Students can run 35 laps (more or less) without any financial obligation, while school raises money for a project that may benefit the students. The process to get pledges was easy because students could send an email out about Boosterthon to their family members, post on facebook, or create a video.
I Interviewed Mrs. Delgado, president of the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) to gather more information about Boosterthon. As she explained, the Boosterthon was a 9 day school program that started with a pep rally and taught kids about leadership, fitness and character building. The program ended with 3 different fun runs.
This year, Boosterthon had a new character theme called BACKYARD BOX OFFICE, a movie theme all about making a difference by getting into character. Each class watched movie about REAL kids dedicated to making people’s lives better. After that Oct 7th was the date selected for the fun run, where families and friends came to watch and support the fun run. And the way it works is you try to run 35 laps or more around the field and every 6 laps you get water so how many times would you get water so do the math 35 divided by 6… and you get …………………… 5 remainder 5. The process to get pledges was easy because students could send an email out to their family members, post on facebook, or create a video.
There were a lot of cool prizes to that were given out to student for pledges such as fun run bracelet, shoe swag, a flyer, etc. So you might be wondering which class got the most pledges?? It was Mr. Abruzzi’s first grade class got the most pledges. The school raised over $18,000, which is AWESOME!!!!

Barnes and Noble Night
by Madison Brophy and Taylor Younker
Barnes and nobles night was a spectacular night of fun and fright…
On a Thursday night in October, I got to make a lollipop into a ghost. That was just one of the fun stations lead by the teachers at Barnes & Noble Night. There was also a bowling station, a fake tattoo station, a face paint station, and more. Because of the Halloween theme, people were able to wear their costumes for the first time at our Barnes & Noble Night.
Second grade students performed. They sang “Pete the Cat and His White Shoes” and “Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom” lead by Mrs. Dry, our music teacher. We do this special event because it helps raise money for the school, so students can buy books and to have FUN!
Ms. Bee’s class had the most students attend the event so they won a cookie party. Her class had 15 of 24 students come out to the event. Only 9 students did not come from her class! At the cookie party, the cookies were so big that Ms. Bee made them take half home! They got to have the other half in school. I can’t wait to see what we do next year!

After School/Extracurricular Activities: Karate
By Cyan Kvacky
Lots of kids like after school activities. Some kids do karate. In karate, discipline is a very big topic. Discipline is very important if you would like to join. You need discipline because in karate you learn a lot as you progress through belts. And, if you have no discipline, you will be talking and playing with the equipment; Then when the time comes to test, you'll know nothing and not progress to the next stripe or belt. When you show discipline you will be able to pass, and learn new things such as katas and weapon training.
Being in shape is also a big part of karate. In karate we stretch as soon as we start class. As we learn new punches and kicks, it will be harder to do if you are not in shape. In karate we do sparring. Sparring is where you use all of your punches kicks and blocks against another person. You have foam armour to protect you from your opponent. Also, in karate we learn katas, a mixture of punches, kicks, blocks and other stuff we have learned. We have different katas for our weapons. You get a different weapon every time you progress belts. Some of the weapons are bows, nunchucks said, tonfas, kama. These weapons are used at a certain time during the day.
Do you think you would like to do karate?
A Scary Day for Willow Lane
It wasn't Halloween, but it was just as scary. Many don't know, but the first day of PSSAs last year (2016) was plagued with a problem; There was not power at Willow Lane. Below is a movie featuring Mr. John, a custodian of the school, and some Willow Lane School Newspaper reporters explaining what had happened. This tale is included in this paper because of its scary nature. What has happened to you that is scary? If you were to make a movie about it, what would the movie be like?
Roald Dahl Assembly
Josephine Holmwood
Today, we had a an assembly on the famous author Roald Dahl. The assembly took place in the gym of Willow Lane Elementary School. All of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teacher were there along with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.
Roald Dahl is a famous author who wrote several children's books like...The BFG, The Witches, James and The Giant Peach, and many more. He wrote 48 books in all. Roald was born on September 13th, 1916 and he sadly died on November 23rd, 1990.
In the assembly the actors asked the kids in the audience trivia questions about Roald Dahl and his books. The kids would raise their hands quietly and the actors would pick 1 quiet student to see if they could answer the trivia question and if the kid was correct the actor would bring out a projector and the CORRECT sign would appear and if it was wrong the WRONG sign would appear on the projector.
Joe McGee Visits Willow Lane Elementary School
By Angel Suratwala
Brainsssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss! That is a phrase that we said frequently when author Joe McGee came to our school for an assembly. He read us his story called Peanut Butter And Brains.
When he was little, he got a certificate that congratulated him for being a kid author. He still has that certificate today. He keeps it because it encourages him to write books like he does now.
When he was a child, he had a very big imagination and that's why he is an author. When he read his book to us, he convinced me to be an author too!
Pumpkin Seeds Acrostic Poem
Tower Garden
By Vanessa Owusu-Anim
Are you wondering, "What is the tower garden?"
A tower garden is a garden that doesn’t grow in the ground. Our tower garden is located in Mrs. Dweck’s room. You might have seen it while your class was walking by. The tower garden does not use soil, but uses water instead.
You might not think it will work because you need sunlight. The tower garden came with LED lights to be used as the sunlight. Are you wondering how it works? Well, it is the water that helps it. It has a system that regulates how much water a plant should get.
The tower garden grew a lot from Friday to Monday. Bok choy grew the most. It grew three centimeters in three days. Others plants such as gourmet lettuce, arugula, and broccoli grew only one centimeter in length. Organic lettuce and kale didn’t grow at all.
Before it grew, we had to test the water for the right amount. We even used plant acid.
Growing with the tower garden is a good experience for everyone. You could buy one yourself to help stop hunger.
Tower Gardens
Cassie and Lexie Doemling
About The Tower Garden
The tower garden has come to Willow Lane. The tower garden is a column that has openings to grow herbs, fruits, and vegetables. It may take up to to four weeks to grow the food. The nice part about the tower garden is you can grow the fruits, vegetables, and herbs indoors or outdoors. The tower garden has 36 planting spaces. The top row is for herbs because they are the lightest. The middle row is for leafy vegetables. And, the bottom row is for heavier fruits like strawberries and cucumbers. Tower gardens are mostly made of plastic. When you buy a Tower Garden it’s about 500 dollars.
How To Build It
First, you have to attach a water tube that will connect to the tower pieces. Once you connect the water tube, you put two metal rods onto the tower and connect it into the two holes on the base of the tower. After that, you attach the tower pieces onto the rods you attached. It might seem quite hard, but it is quite easy. As long as you read the instructions, you will be successful building your tower garden!
How It Works
There are little sponges on the tower garden that hold the seeds inside their little holes
and the plant will grow from there. Inside the tower garden is a water system. There is water in the reservoir at the bottom of the Tower Garden. A pump moves the water up a small tube. After that, the water rains back down, and the process repeats over and over watering the herbs, fruits, and vegetables. Instead of sunlight there are bars that shine light onto the plants. So even if you plant with the Tower Garden inside the plants will still have light.
What We Will Do After The Harvest
Are you wondering what we will do when the plants finish growing in the Tower Garden? We might use what we grow as ingredients and have a cook off! Another idea is we could harvest our vegetables, herbs, and fruits and donate them to the homeless. Finally, another idea is we could teach a lesson to the other students about the tower garden and how it works. The School Garden
Brooke Floczak
Our school garden is when people grow food for our school, Willow Lane. Sometimes, they grow fruits and vegetables for our school salad bar for students to enjoy during lunch. When I was in second grade, our class helped grow tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, and all kinds of other things. I noticed there is a beautiful arbor and several signs showing off our garden.
Some questions I’d like to ask about the school garden:
How long it take to build it?
Where does the school get the seeds and plants to plant?
Who had the idea to make the school garden?
The Twin Towers (9/11)
Samay Suratwala and Jonathan Nelson
The World Trade Centers or the twin towers were located in the financial district of New York City. The towers opened on April 4, 1973. After the completion of the building they were considered the tallest building in the world. According to National Geographic the twin towers represented the economic prosperity and military strength of the United states On September 11, 2001 the world watched in horror as the United States suffered the worst homeland attack since Pearl Harbor in 1941.
3,000 Americans lost their lives in attacks on the Pentagon, the World Trade Center and on United Flight 93 where courageous passengers gave their own lives in order to stop terrorists from flying their plane into another target. There were so many heart breaking and tragic moments and images that came out of 9/11 but two stand out most in people's mpd but a massive pile of rubble. Here are 5 interesting facts about the buildings that will forever be in our memory.
It took eight years for workers to fully complete both of the World Trade Center Towers. When buildings opened they were dreamed up by the chairman of the Chase Manhattan Bank, David rockefeller and former Governor of New York Nelson Rockefeller
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda-affiliated hijackers flew two Boeing 767 jets into the complex, beginning with the North Tower at 8:46 a.m., then the South Tower at 9:03 a.m., in a coordinated act of terrorism. Both towers collapsed. The attacks on the World Trade Center killed 2,606 people in and within the vicinity of the towers, as well as all 157 on board the two aircraft.
In 2014, One World Trade Center opened on the site of the former Twin Towers. The new building, standing at 1,776 feet, is a symbol of renewal and hope in New York City. The 104-story building was designed to be the safest commercial building in the world and connects to the NYC subway line. The design is simple and timeless, representing the tradition of American prosperity in construction.
In July 2001 just two months before the terrorist attacks of September 11, the Port Authority agreed to lease the twin towers to Larry a New York City developer. Silverstein agreed to pay the equivalent of $3.2 billion over the next 99 years.
It has been 15 years since the towers collapsed. We will remember the people that died in the twin tower terrorist attack.

BY SAMAY AND JONATHANTrout in the Classroom
By Mikayla Fox and Husrit Grewal
Hi name is Mikayla and my name is Husrit. We are here to tell you about the project that is taking place in the 5th grade. It is trout in the classroom.
We interviewed Mrs. Durigan, a 5th grade teacher. She said that it is a great hands-on experience for students to learn about ecosystems and how the tank mimics the ecosystems in a fun way. Its an engaging project and it requires the students attention at all the time.
She said that the most important part of this project is the setup; if we don’t set it up correctly the fish could die. When we set it up, we have to make sure everything is in order so nothing will go wrong like a fish getting stuck in the filter. She also said that we don’t use cleaning products because there will be a little trace of chemicals still left behind. We can only clean it with water. We also have to clean the waste because if the fish swim around in their waste, it’ll become toxic and they can die. However, we have the filter to do that. If we misplace the filter the fish will be more to die.
There is many important parts in the fish tank. Some of them are the air pump, filter, chiller, air stone, gravel, egg basket, insulation, thermometer, and the power head.
We also have to prevent mold from forming. Mold can form if you feed them too much food and the food that they don’t eat sinks to the bottom and gets moldy.
We now know that both the set-up and the clean-up are important as we take care of the fish.
The Story of Lightning
Lency Tankwa, Louis Lichter, and Katherine Harries
Lightning, a beloved mascot to the 5th graders and to the kindergarteners, but where did he come from? Let's go back and look at how this incredible hawk was made.
In 2009 when the school was being built there was a huge Tornado and it was swirling up everything except the school. Everyone saw a lot of lightning. Suddenly, we saw lightning very close to our school. We went outside to see if there was any damage. When we went out, we saw a giant hawk. Not just any hawk, a humungous blue and silver hawk by the name of Lightning. It flew around the school. TO BE CONTINUED!!
When Willow Lane was being built it was where all the Red Hawks flew, so they decided to make it the mascot.
