Jarrell Elementary Newsletter - February 19, 2024
Greetings JES Community!
As we move past the mid-year point, we are gathering mid-year data about your child's progress this school year. We want to ensure that every student is on track for a year or more growth each school year. Please make a note of the assessments below. It is important that every student is well-rested, prepared and present for these assessments. Encourage your child by assuring them that they are prepared and ready to "show what they know!"
The week before spring break is full of exciting things like Read Across America Week, STEAM Night and the most exciting event - SKYDOME PLANETARIUM on Friday, March 8th. More information coming soon!
As always, we are here to support you and your child in any way we can, please so not hesitate to reach out!
with gratitude,
Lara Hutchinson

PRE-K
This week in pre-k, we will be learning transportation helps us reach a destination, and a destination is the place a person is going. In math, we will be learning that a grid is a combination of rows and columns that can show where a point is located. In literacy, we will be learning that sentences can be segmented into individual words, each letter has an order of strokes to correctly draw its shape, and events in a story happen in an order called a sequence.
KINDER
1st GRADE
Reading: We will begin a new unit in reading over fairy tales. We will be making predictions using the text features, the characteristics and structure of the read aloud to correct or confirm our predictions. We will use graphic organizers to organize the setting, characters, events, problem and solution and ending for our fairy tale read alouds. We will also be comparing our read alouds for similarities and differences.
Phonics: We will continue to read from our readers and answer questions about key details in the text. We will read and spell words with ‘ch’ and ‘tch’ as in much and catch. We will also read and spell words with ‘g’ as in got and ‘ge’ as in germ. We will continue distinguishing between statements and questions for identifying the correct punctuation and capital letters at the beginning of our sentences. Our new spelling words are: chips, much, catch, fetch, marsh, shine, flash, and how Students will be tested over these words on Monday, February 26th.
Writing: Students will continue to finish their animal informational text. We will be using these informational texts to create and publish a classroom book that will be submitted to a publishing company. Parents will be able to purchase the published books.
Math: We will continue our unit over place value, comparison, and addition and subtraction to 40. Students will be using strategies to solve the addition and subtraction problems up to 40 by looking at the ones and tens, drawing pictures, and using math manipulatives. Students will also use these strategies to solve word problems.
Social Studies; We will be identifying the characteristics of being a good citizen at home, school, and in our community. These authority figures in our home, school, and in our community will represent truthfulness, justice, equality, respect for oneself and others, responsibility in daily life, and participation in government.
2nd GRADE
In Reading (Skills), we will be learning about the schwa, subject and predicate, and apostrophes. In Math, we will be learning strategies for composing tens and hundreds within 1,000. In Reading (Knowledge), we will be learning about writing key details using the read aloud stories "The Human Body: Building Blocks and Nutrition". In Science, we will be learning about food chains.
3rd GRADE
We hope that everyone enjoyed their four day weekend! For reading this week, we will be continuing our skills of evaluating details to determine key ideas as well as finding text evidence to support our responses by learning more about the solar system, specifically what it is like to be in space as an astronaut! In math, we are wrapping up this unit of fractions by learning more about equivalent fractions. In social studies, we will discuss why we celebrate Black History Month. This week the 3rd graders will be taking a Practice Math STAAR Exam on Thursday and we are looking forward to seeing more evidence of the growth and learning we see in class every day.
4th GRADE
For math we are continuing Unit 5 over fractions with estimating sums and differences using benchmarks and adding mixed numbers. For science we are going to start Unit 8, Sun, Earth and Moon Systems. We will begin by describing patterns of shadows observed and seasons throughout the year. In language arts we continue reading nonfiction text about the study of the earth. We will read, find key ideas, and text evidence to support our ideas and answers. We also will learn how different nonfiction text features guide the reader when gaining new information about a topic. In social studies we will continue studying the Texas Revolution and the impact it has made on us today.
5th GRADE
This week in math, with no school on Monday, we'll kick off our week by jumping right into the practice STAAR test on Tuesday. After the test, we'll wrap up our exploration of multiplication and division of fractions, smoothly transitioning into our adding and subtracting fractions unit by the week's end. It's a week filled with valuable learning experiences!
This week in ELA, we will be finishing up our fun introduction to our Shakespeare Unit by working on descriptive writing, using text evidence to understand the perspective of a character, and demonstrating comprehension of the last few scenes of our play.
In our science studies this week, students will embark on a journey into the past as we focus on fossils as evidence of living organisms. Additionally, we'll delve into the fascinating carbon dioxide-oxygen cycle, unraveling the interconnected web of life on Earth. Get ready for an exploration of the mysteries hidden in the remnants of time!
Library
In the library we are continuing our celebration of Black History Month by reading the books "All are Welcome", "Our Skin", and "All are neighbors" and discussing that everyone is welcome no matter their race, religion or background.
4th and 5th graders will be completing their black history biography posters and will hang them around the school.
