Advice Third Graders Would Like to Give Their Parents
Recently during a WSE third grade classroom morning meeting, a teacher posed a sentence prompt: Advice I’d give to my parents… Very quickly, one student shared that he would like to ask his parents to get off their phones. Most students quickly chimed in and agreed that they were planning to give the same answer! The teacher then asked what the students would like their parents to do instead of being on their phones so often. The following were activities suggested by the third graders:
· Do something with your kids
· Play a game together
· Read with your child
· Snuggle with your child
· Talk to your child
· Have a meal with your child
· Go outside to play with your child
· Watch a TV show with your child
Students also made a big point to say that they want their parents to stay off their phones while they attend the child’s sporting events, games and activities. They really want to see their parents watching them instead of their phones! What other advice did they have for their parents? Relax a little and don’t be so stressed. Talk with children rather than yelling at them about problems or situations. Help children with things they don’t understand. And please ask about your child’s day, then really listen and act like you’re interested!
While this was an “unscientific poll”, I’d say that our children are issuing a cry for the right kind of attention. Close connections between parents and children are essential for building a trusting relationship that encourages a child to come to you with serious concerns. While technology can definitely be helpful in our lives, it has truly become an obsession for many people. That obsession has put a strain on our family relationships. Issue yourself a challenge; make your evenings with your children “phone free”. You’ll be glad you did.
