A Look At Our Week.....
Last week's newsletter was full of information about what your child is learning academically, so in the spirit of Dr. King I wanted to share some of what your child is learning socially and emotionally.
We will be learning about Dr. King's message of living in peace and equality this week. We will be turning his words into action by thinking about peaceful resolutions to any conflicts that may arise in our daily Kindergarten lives. We will also be drawing a picture of somebody who looks different from us, and listing all the things that are alike between us and this person.
We will be reading "Tacky the Penguin" this week (penguins is our theme!). This is a great story about how a penguin who is different from all the other penguins, saves the day for the whole penguin community. Again, we are learning to celebrate and appreciate differences in our classroom, and to synergize so that our class benefits from each child's gift.
You may have heard about our monthly PBIS assemblies from your kids. Each month we get together in the gym with the first and second graders, and celebrate each other's accomplishments this month. Certificates are given to Bus Riders of the Month, ARTSIE recipents(peer nominated award that goes to somebody who demonstrates being Attentive Reponsible Thoughtful and Safe), golden ticket winners, classes who most exhibit the 7 Habits in Specials classes etc. It is a loud, community celebration - and we love it! Our class will be kicking off the next assembly (at the end of the month) by performing a dance to "Believer" (Kidzbop version - don't worry!). This all stemmed from one child saying that it was his favorite song. We listened to it during Writing time, and the whole class started singing along and saying that it was their favorite too!! Hence, we decided to learn a dance and the children are excited to pep up the next PBIS rally!
The class reward for filling up the compliment jar this week was voting on what our next Pretend Play Center should be. The children decided to turn it into a cookie/cake store, and I'm excited to reimagine that center with them this week!
We will be doing some reading/phonics assessments with your child over the next couple of weeks. You will receive more information on your child's academic progress in the end of quarter report.
I will be sending home more sight words this week for your child to memorize, as well as their books for reading homework. Please continue to read to your child other books, in addition to listening to them read their leveled readers.
