Welcome Yearlings to the Start of the 2019-2020 School Year!
- School doors open for our students at 7:40 am.
- The first school bell rings at 8:15 am for students to make their way to their lockers.
- The tardy bell rings at 8:25 am.
- The last bell rings at 3:40 pm.
- Students are expected to be picked up by 3:50 pm.
- Please be patient with our school busses and their routes and times the first several weeks of school.
- School office hours are from 7:40 am - 4:10 pm.
- Because we typically are enrolling a large number of students during the first week of school, the main office foyer may be crowded at times. Please be patient and courteous with our office staff, as they will service your needs as quickly as they can.
- Be sure to have a photo identification card when visiting our campus, in order to enter our school.
- Please be patient with our traffic congestion at the parent pick-up and drop-off area, which is located on the side of the campus facing the Tobin Library. Follow all directions from our cross-walk guards on duty in that area, as safety is our number one priority.
- Do not drive through the front of the campus, as this is our bus dock area. If you have school business to attend, you may park your vehicle in the front parking lot.
- Students may purchase PE uniforms from their coaches during their PE class. The cost is $20.
- Make sure your child comes to school every day with his/her school supplies.
- Our family specialist, Monica Encina, will support your child in need, to ensure that we take care of all our students. Her number is 210-356-3848. Mrs. Encina speaks Spanish, as well.
- Ensure your child gets plenty of rest each school night so he/she is prepared to learn in school throughout the entire day.
- Beginning this school year, we are providing every Garner student with a free breakfast and lunch.
- Whenever you have a question, are upset with us, or need assistance, do no hesitate to reach out to me. My email address is jbojes@neisd.net . My work number is 210-356-3805 and my administrative assistant is Mrs. Lisa Pantusa. I will return your communication request within 24 hours.
We are excited to begin the new school year and look forward to seeing all of our students on Monday! Go Yearlings!
AVID School-Wide
Our vision at Garner is to prepare our students to be competitive upon graduation in a global society that continues to change. I brought this vision to Garner two years ago when I became the principal of this excellent community. This vision aligned perfectly with Garner's mission that was already set in motion prior to my assignment as the principal. We are committed to academic excellence and college and career readiness, while providing opportunities for our diverse students in a safe, positive and respectful learning environment. Our school's vision and mission is aligned with AVID's mission, which is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.
On the first day of school, we will begin teaching all of our students one of these AVID strategies, which is organizational skills. Our students will begin learning how to organize their 3-ring binders and how to utilize their agenda books. As a community of learners, we need your active support by doing the following:
- Make sure that your child comes to school every day with these items: 3-ring binder, zipper pouch, notebook paper, tab dividers, pencils, pens, one red pen, highlighters, and their student agenda book. We will provide your child with an AVID agenda book (They are on back order, so we will start the school year issuing xerox copies of the student agenda book. Once they come in, we will distribute the spiraled agenda books to all students.)
- Do binder checks with your child at home to ensure they stay organized between school and home and the weekends.
Next week, I will send you a checklist and easy guidelines that you can use while conducting binder checks with your child, so that you know how the 3-ring binders should be organized, and what contents should be written inside the agenda books.
As we continue to work towards becoming an AVID school-wide campus, and implement these AVID strategies, I will communicate and share these with you so that you can take an active role in helping us teach your child to become college and career ready.
