Principal's Message...
Hi Sierra Families
This month students began Unit 2 in our Social Emotional Learning Program.
Unit 2 explores recognizing and appreciating each other’s emotions, perspectives, and contributions, and identifies strategies so everyone feels welcome and included. Students learn about:
- their own and others’ diversity and contributions
- their own and others’ perspectives to ensure everyone feels included
- breaking stereotypes and creating welcoming environments
- empathy and caring for others’ feelings
- supporting and encouraging others in unfair situations.

Important Message About Fowler Parking Lot
It is unfortunate that there has been some very rude and disrespectful behavior by individuals wanting to park in the Fowler way parking lot once it is full. This behavior is unacceptable. If this type of behavior continues we have no other choice than to close the Fowler way parking lot for end of the day parking.

Library News
Hello Dragons!
We are getting ready for our Fall Scholastic book fair. This fair will start on Oct 28th and run until Nov 3rd. If you would like to volunteer please contact me in the library at 530-622-0814 ext 7636 or you can email me at dgervaise@pusdk8.us. We will be open for sales during the Fall carnival and during school hours Oct 30-Nov 3. If you get an opportunity, please check out our scholastic book fair site at https://www.scholastic.com/bf/sierraelemsch2 . Here you can check out all book fair information and set up your e-wallet. E-wallet is a wonderful way to have students shop the fair without losing or forgetting their money. New this year, teachers can set up their own e-wallet account so families can add to it and they can shop the fair or online. Flyers are going home on Friday so students can get an idea of what great books are coming! Remember, good things happen when you read!
Miss Dora
Book Fair Hours:
Oct 28th (4-6pm)
Oct 30 (8:30-2:30pm)
Oct 31-Nov 3rd (8:30-3:30pm)
♫ Notes from Mrs. Young
Hello all!
October brings so many exciting activities. Kindergarten and first grade are working a lot on
‘beat’ with stories like Going on a Bear Hunt, drum circle chants and rhythm stick games. They also have learned songs like Lucy Locket and will be passing a ball to the beat of all different types of music. First and second grade classes have done an amazing job creating rhythm patterns for all sorts of activities including chants and songs. We just recently have been trying to spice up our songs with ‘ostinato patterns’ using different instruments. 3rd grade continue to learn dances and song performances that could possibly be used in a winter show…so be on the lookout for flyers or calendar additions. Finally, as 4th and 5th grade students continue to grow confident in their recorder playing, they have been challenged with the task of improvising their own short songs. See if they want to write one for you ;)
So much is happening with optional extra music opportunities as well! Band students are making great progress, but of course the more they work at home the faster their progress will be so please continue to encourage at home practice. Keyboard class is also continuing each Tuesday of this month.
One last quick thought: performing can be very personal and makes many students scared or nervous. If you can, have a chat with your students about the importance of showing kindness because that encouragement and support goes a long way.
“Music acts like a magic key, to which the most tightly closed heart opens.”
― Maria von Trapp
Take care,
Mrs. Young
