South Oaks School

Happy Thanksgiving! October 2017

Principal's Message

The year is off to a great start and we are thankful for that. During this season of Thanksgiving, I hope we can all take a few moments to reflect on our many blessings in our families, in our community and in our school. South Oaks is blessed with awesome students and families. We are thankful for teachers that care deeply for their students and work so hard to help them learn and grow.

This month we teach about Safety (bus and fire safety), as well as host a high quality Artist in the School Residency with artist, KC Adams. We are starting to implement our new positive behaviour program, so we anticipate this to translate into positive behaviour habits for kids. I also look forward to the FCC food collection as well. It is always amazing to see how generous the Grunthal community is when there is a need. So, thanks for this opportunity to be involved in your child's education. It is something that I feel very thankful for. Have a great month of learning with us!

"Terry Fox Run" Fundraiser & School Event

The Terry Fox Run will be taking place at South Oaks on Thursday, September 28th and in preparation for the event an assembly will be held on Wednesday, September 27th.

The assembly for "Terry Fox" is to raise awareness and have fun at the event. Terry asked that every Canadian donate $1 so in that spirit.......each student is encouraged to bring a loonie to school and:

- If South Oaks; as a school raises $500 - the principal, gym teacher, and perhaps others, will be "slimed"!!

- The top class raising funds will get an extra gym time.

- The top student in each class will get a ribbon; and the top donaters will get to pour slime on the poor victims heads!

October is Safety Month......

Safety is a major concern in any school, and at South Oaks October is the time when teachers especially emphasize Fire and Bus Safety. Consequently, on October 10th firefighters will provide fire safety presentations to Grade 4 students. All classes will be teaching about fire safety as well.

On a day during Bus Safety week, October 23rd-27th, we will be doing bus evacuation drills. Even if your child walks or bikes to school, this is an important practice, as all students go on field trips.

Most school bus fatalities occur when children are outside the bus, and 75% of these fatalities involve children under the age of nine.

Make sure your children know and follow these rules:

1.0 Be on time

2.0 Never run to or from the bus.

3.0 Stand back from the curb.

4.0 Don't push or shove.

5.0 Stay in your seat.

6.0 Don't yell or shout.

7.0 Always obey the driver.

8.0 Wait for the driver's signal before crossing.

9.0 Always cross at least 10 feet in front of the bus.

10.0 Never crawl under a school bus.

Remove Drawstrings:

Clothing that your children like may not always be safe. Drawstrings can catch in playground equipment, fences, school bus doors and escalators. Wherever possible remove, shorten or replace drawstrings with another kind of fastener.

Drive Away Hunger 2017

From September 25th till October 6th South Oaks School will be a part of the Drive Away Hunger food drive, sponsored by Farm Credit Canada, in partnership with Southeast Helping Hands, the Grunthal Ministerial, the Grunthal Caring Hands Food Bank, and area youth groups. Since 2004, over 17.0 millions pounds of food has been donated through the FCC Drive Away Hunger campaign to food banks all across Canada.

Drive Away Hunger began in 2004 when an FCC employee in Ontario drove an open-cab tractor and trailer through the Listowel area. Sometimes sleeping under his trailer at nights, he raised about 60,000 pounds of food in eight days for local food banks. This year, tractor tours will take place in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia. This became the model for FCC's campaign.

To facilitate this campaign, tables will be set up in the foyer of the north wing of the school during the campaign, and students are encouraged to bring in donations of food. The following is a list of the most needed food items, according to Food Banks Canada:

Pasta products and Rice

Canned/Powered Milk

Canned meats and Fish

Fruit Juices

Dry and Canned soups and Stews

Pasta Sauce

Canned Fruits and Vegetables

Breakfast Cereal

Infant Formula and Baby Food

Beans and Legumes

If you have any questions concerning the Drive Away Hunger campaign, please contact the school at 204-434-6165.
