This inspiring book takes place in 1964 in Tiburon, South Carolina. Young, motherless Lily barely can bare living with her father, who claims that as a child accidently fired the gun that killed her mother. Then her maid and only person she could talk to, Rosaleen, was arrested for confronting three men, who were white and racist. Lily breaks Rosaleen out of jail and runs away with her to a place that she thinks her mother once lived. When the four Boatwright sisters take them in, Lily gets taken care of better than she ever has.
