PARENT STAR NEWS -- NOTICIERO
October 7 - 11
Happy Friday Shooting Stars! ***** ¡Feliz Viernes Estrellas Fugaz!
It is always a bucket filling experience when you get to see students recognized for their outstanding character and leadership!
Today, we had several students selected for September's Student of the Month. The district selects the character trait of the month through the counseling department; August and September highlighted effective communication and kindness.
The teachers selected two students that live these traits every day! Students walked around the school in their own parade, and we were able to celebrate your kids in such a fun way!
Next month, we will be focusing on anti-bullying! Wear blue and boots on Monday to stomp out bullying!
Our students are leaders, learners, and kind. I am so grateful to work at Silver Lake.
Proud to be your principal,
Nicole Whiteside

Lunch and Specials Group Adjustments this year ***** AJUSTOS DE ALMUERZO Y ESPECIALES ESTE AÑO
A part of the discussion was focused around how to continue building our community as a whole. One of the things we decided upon was mixing our Dual Language and Monolingual students during specials and lunch times. Students are able to meet new friends, and get to know Shooting Stars throughout the day.
The specials teachers were able to look at class lists, and place different students into groups for the whole campus. This is not an easy thing to do logistically. Teachers mix the students, get our friends to the correct places, and account for them! We even planned for emergency situations and being able to quickly identify that we have everyone in our classrooms!
One of the considerations was also preparation for middle school. Knowing a variety of students helps prepare students for the moment they walk into the cafeteria and are provided free seating. They know more students from our own campus!
Our campus is a place for community. We are proud we get to continue living that!
****************************************************

While traveling in GCISD buses, we want to ensure a safe ride for all passengers and meet your travel needs. All luggage, equipment or carry on items must be stored underneath a seat and may not block the aisle or emergency exit. If possible, encourage students and staff not to take items that won't fit under a seat. Storing things in a seat, whether attended or not, can become projectiles if the bus has to stop quickly. If you have items that cannot fit under a seat or more items than space available on the bus, please contact Cynthia Patterson at 5593, or at cynthia.patterson@gcisd.net to help with arrangements. Additionally, to keep our buses in good condition please make students aware that they may not wear cleats or other shoes or footwear that can damage the bus floor.
***************************************************
Nurses' Notes
A friendly reminder that all students should have an extra set of seasonally appropriate clothing, including underwear, in their backpack. Clothes can be soiled for various reasons besides potty accidents. (mud splashes, food spills, etc.) Your help is much appreciated in maintaining their comfort at school. The clinic has a limited supply of underwear and clothes. If clothing is unavailable, you will be called to bring clothes for your student.
Thank you,
Nurse Ashlyn

Brief Reminders/ Recordatorios Breve
1. BREAKFAST
The school doors open at 7:15 for students, if you child is having breakfast it is imperative that they get to school on time so they are not tardy to class. Breakfast will stop at 7:35. We advise for students who wish to eat breakfast arrive no later than 7:20 to allow plenty of time to go through the breakfast line and eat their breakfast before the 7:40 bell rings. Students should be in class and ready to learn at 7:40 pm. After 7:40 students will be marked absent.
A reimbursable breakfast is offered at all schools for $1.45 paid and $0.30 reduced-priced. Breakfast times may vary slightly per campus, see below for advertised serving times:
Elementary schools: 7:15 a.m. - 7:35 a.m.
Middle schools: 7:30 a.m. - 8 a.m. with a second breakfast option per campus schedule
High schools: 7:50 a.m. - 8:40 a.m. with a second breakfast option per campus schedule
2.DROP OFF
The quickest and safest way to drop off your child is in the back driveway and we recommend that all parents use this method for drop off. Staff are waiting to greet your child and escort them into the building beginning at 7:15 a.m.
If you are walking to drop off your child, please be prepared to leave them at the front door. Talking to them about this ahead of time will help make the transition much easier. It is natural for students to be anxious about change so having a routine of hugging, saying your goodbyes and then letting them walk in will make it easier. We also let children know that mom's and dad's have work that they need to do and students have work to do at school. We also remind them that their families will be back to pick them up as soon as school is over!
3. PICKUP
If you are driving to the campus to pick up your child please use the back driveway. We will bring your child directly to your car. This is the safest method for pickup.
When using the back driveway to pick up your child, please display your yellow/pink car tag sign to the staff member who is calling names to the gym. To help them please hold up your sign and show this to them for easier viewing. Please leave the sign visibly displayed until your child is loaded into your vehicle. We have several staff members helping with our pickup system and this helps ensure a smooth and efficient dismissal.
Thank you very much as we strive to ensure safe and smooth drop off and pick up procedures for all students.
**************************
1. DESAYUNO
Celebrating Birthdays
Due to a rise in the number of students that have reported food-related allergies, we ask parents
who are interested in celebrating their child's birthday at school to send a non-edible treat (stickers, pencils, etc.)
Please no balloons due to latex allergies. Please make sure you include ALL students in the class.
The students love stickers, pencils, bubbles, etc. and our SLE teachers do a wonderful job at making sure our students feel special on their birthdays. We ask parents to please send these items with the student or drop off in the front office by 2:15 PM.
