OLVCS Updates
May 14, 2021
Dear Parents,
Hard to believe we are in the home stretch. It is great to see our students learning and reaping the benefits of our year of in-person instruction. The image for this newsletter's header show middle school student working together to learn about how things decompose (or not) over time in their science class.
If you have not already, I encourage you to take a few moments to view the great virtual Art Show video with your student. Our students created a variety of art pieces that relate to the theme of Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. Below is the link to the video and message from Mrs. McQueary, our Art Teacher.
As COVID mitigation guidelines have been loosening, I have started getting questions about how this will impact how things are going at our school. In short, the COVID mitigation requirements at our school will likely stay the same until the end of school year. Our school is obligated to follow the guidelines of the state of PA and the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, which I don't expect to change.
Finally, we have a number of spots left in our incoming Kindergarten class that we'd love to fill, as well as a few spots at each of the other grade levels. Further, I just heard from Ms. Mallet at Saint Joseph's that she only has only twelve openings left for new students for Fall 2021! Don't be shy! Spread the word about our school, Saint Joseph's, and OLV Preschool, so we all can share the love of Jesus with more families in the Centre County area.
Taking on the heart of Jesus,
Chad Packer, MEd
Principal, OLVCS

OLVCS Race To The Finish
OLVCS students in the Solar Car Club tested their creations at an intramural solar car competition. The students had been meeting weekly for the past few weeks to design and build their cars.
"Although we only had 14 students and 8 cars, I think all the students had fun and got to practice the engineering design process first hand," said Mrs. Lisa Groves, OLVCS Science Teacher and one of the advisors for the club. OLVCS Middle School teachers, Mr. Jim Hoy and Mrs. Meghan Relkin, also helped with the club.
Below is list of the competition winners:
- Fastest car - Matt W, Tate S (8th)
- Straightest car - John R, Mark S (7th)

Pierogi Sale Raises Over $1400 for Athletics
OLV Church generously donated $1,490 raised by this year's Lenten Pierogi Sale to OLVCS Athletic Program. This donation is especially important this year, as the Athletic Program was unable host a fundraising event due to COVID mitigation restrictions.
Thank you to all the student-athletes and parish adult volunteers who helped with the Pierogi Sale--and especially all those who bought piergies!

Bishop Issues Updated COVID Directives Regarding Church Activities
Per Diocesan protocols issued in 2020, the mask requirement remains in effect Diocesan church settings such as at Mass and other religious activities in church (e.g., confessions, adoration, novenas, etc.). However, as of Memorial Day, May 31, 2021, at 12:01 am, other mitigation efforts, however, may be curtailed.
Thus, parishes may resume offertory processions, use hymnals and other materials, fill holy water fonts, and the like. Singing may resume, but only with Masks in place. As a result, parish choirs may not be able to resume their normal function until masks are no longer required. Confessionals and other enclosed places may be used, but only with adequate ventilation.
