Virtual Arts Events for May 2021

Arts Integration Opportunities for all Teachers in Utah

Arts Are Essential to Student Learning

At Ogden School District, we believe that the arts are an essential part of a student's education. Throughout the year, we strive to create opportunities for all students in every grade to experience at least one professional-level art event. With current COVID restrictions, most of these events will not be available this year. However, the arts community in Utah has stepped up and created a treasure trove of virtual events available to all teachers and students in Utah. Feel free to use any of these events to teach social-emotional learning or to integrate art in any way. If you would like ideas about using these events in your classroom, talk with your art teachers or contact me at murdockd@ogdensd.org. This document will be updated monthly.

Teachers who apply one of the lesson plans in the classroom before the end of this school year and complete a short survey will receive a $50 gift card. Limited quantity available, please register with susan.klinker@wvc-ut.gov.

Each unit presents a local “thought leader” from our community, who is a passionate expert on a topic. They are artists, scientists, educators, and engineers – who have creative ideas worth sharing. The short video clips are paired with a 7-12th grade curriculum, lesson plans, and arts integration activities linked to core curriculum standards. Utah All-State Art Show- Virtual at the Springfield Museum

Forty-nine years ago, the Utah All-State High School Art Show was established to honor the best high school artists in the state for their creativity, talent, and dedication. This exhibition is the result of an ongoing collaboration between the Springville Museum of Art, high school teachers and students, and various private partners.

This year was unique; the pandemic and social distancing protocols presented a challenge to our traditional exhibition process which led to our first-ever digital submission and online jurying system. A panel of twelve professional artists and arts administrators carefully reviewed each of the 892 entries in order to create this exhibition. The show has a final selection of 325 works, representing 104 Utah high schools, which collectively highlight the talent, creativity, and promise of the upcoming generation of artists.

View the exhibition in person during Museum open hours or visit the online gallery linked below.

Spring and Summer PD Opportunities

Songworks in Action

June 21-25th

Playful Teaching, Vibrant Learning!

That motto sounds encouraging and supportive, doesn’t it? That’s because it is! Children feel the vibrancy of immersing themselves in learning as they play, read, study and compose on a foundation of musicality. Evolving since the 1980’s leaders of SongWorks Educators Association have crafted the pedagogy of the SongWorks approach to teaching and learning. Having attended SongWorks summer courses, educators report welcomed transformations for them and their students as all relax into the SongWorks experience. We invite you to join us and to experience SongWorks in Action for you and your students.

The SongWorks Educators Association (incorporated in 1992) is an international network of educators whose activities are built on the premise that students should be at the center of and actively involved in their musical studies. This means that musical learning often takes place in the form of singing games that include fun physical movement and social engagement, providing the groundwork for serious progressive study and skill development. Teachers at every level of the educational field from early childhood through university—classroom and independent music teachers alike—contribute and gain insight through this network of educators.

Re-Connect. Re-Kindle... Re-Ignite!!

We are thrilled to announce the dates of our annual Teacher Workshop. We are yet to make our decision about the details - hopefully, we can dance in the same room - we will make sure to keep sharing the updates about how it will be organized in a safe, healthy dance environment. Meanwhile, put it in your calendar so that you won't miss this exciting week of learning, connecting, and sharing!

Ririe-Woodbury's Teacher Workshop is designed for teachers who are working in the university, professional, and/or secondary school settings. Shared experiences in technique, improvisation, choreography, and body conditioning will provide participants the opportunity for artistic growth and rejuvenation. The participants will address the Utah State Core Curriculum requirements, trends in the field, and issues of dance training and dance making to increase and elevate the skills and practices of teaching in the field.
