News for the week of January 7th
The Book Fair is coming!
Reading is the most important skill you can teach a child. Of all the skills children learn, it is the one you can influence the most.
We invite you to visit our Scholastic Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading that provides families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encouraging kids to read every day so they can lead better lives.
Our Scholastic Book Fair theme – Story Laboratory: Reading Gives You Super Power! – is part of an incredible energy source for reading that brings to school a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books will motivate them to read more. And like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they’ll get.
Reading is vital to every child’s success, and raising kids as readers means getting involved while they’re young. Now is the time. Since there will never be a substitute for a parent’s direct involvement in his/her child’s education, please make plans to visit our Book Fair. Hope to see you there!

Book of the Week: Pierre the Penguin by Jean Marzollo and Laura Regan
Pierre the Penguin is a true story and is nominated for this year's South Carolina Picture Book Award. The pictures are detailed, and the rhymes used to tell the story are fun and informative.
Pierre is a penguin who didn't molt for a few seasons, so his feathers became brittle and fell off. As a result, he didn't swim because the water was too cold on his featherless skin. To help Pierre out, Pam Schaller, an aquatic bioligist at San Francisco's California Academy of Sciences, fashioned a neoprene wetsuit for Pierre. This wetsuit allowed Pierre to swim with the other penguins, and his feathers eventually grew back.
Young readers will be especially interested in Pierre's story, and I'm so glad that there is a question and answer with the aquatic biologist who cared for Pierre at the end of the book. This is extremely helpful!
If you'd like to learn more about the penguins at the California Academy of Sciences, check out their live penguin cam at http://www.calacademy.org/webcams/penguins/.

IB Information
Our school is in an evaluation year for our IB program. Our teachers have worked hard the first part of the year preparing a self-study where we evaluate ourselves and provide evidence for how we are meeting the expectations of the International Baccalaureate Program. Soon we will offer a parent workshop to help give a better understanding of some of the elements of the program. Your child will also receive one of our IB report cards with the 2nd quarter report cards. Please take the time to read these with your child and help to create a goal for improvement.
