Investigator Seizes Illegal Game Equipment
A joint investigation by the Michigan attorney general and the Michigan Game Control Board led state investigators to seize the alleged illegal gambling machine from a Sunoco gas station at 496 Main Street in Belleville with the help of the Belleville Police Department.
The coin shoving was seized on March 8 after Sunoko's representatives refused to comply with a personally sent cease and desist letter.
"Illegal gambling could lead to other, more serious unwanted crimes that compromise the safety of our communities," MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams said. "This investigation is a clear reminder that business owners should abide by the law and not provide illegal games in their businesses, and if they do, we are prepared to take action against them."
The investigation began after the MGCB received an anonymous tip from concerned Michigan citizens.
The Michigan Criminal Code broadly prohibits gambling of any kind except as permitted by law. Potential consequences for Michigan businesses operating illegal game consoles include criminal charges and/or fines.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said, "We appreciate the cooperation between our department and the Michigan Game Control Board in our efforts to stop illegal gambling operations," adding, "Illegal gambling appropriates taxes and income from our communities that are used to support our state and schools."
