Message from Mr. Hanzeli
Hello Elger Bay Families!
Veterans Day
By far the most intergenerational and positive connector of the families and community of Elger Bay happens when the very youngest students of our school system have the chance to say thank you and show their appreciation for the commitment and service of each woman and man from all the branches of service.
In pre-pandemic day that was an emotional, colorful, music filled, patriotic celebration in the same place, breathing the same air, looking our veterans (young, older, and oldest) in the eye and saying how much we appreciate the part of themselves they have given for us.
This year, in lieu of that time together, we are working on a visual surprise that we plan to send out in a "special edition" of EBE Home Connections on Tuesday evening. We hope to send it in such a format that you can take a moment with every veteran nearby to watch, or maybe send to the veterans you love the world over, so they might see the appreciation we all have for their service. Please look for that no later than Tuesday evening.
Conferences Correction
Wish I had an editor to blame for my mistake in the last edition...but that would be me :-)
I mistakenly said that there were two November parent conference days with no students. That is incorrect.
On Friday, November 20, school will not be in session. That day is set aside to conference with parents or to make up for the evenings that week when our teachers hold virtual conferences after hours.
Thanksgiving Wednesday
Just a reminder that on Wednesday, November 25 (just before Thansgiving) our Wednesday students WILL NOT attend.

Friday Family Message
November 6, 2020
Good evening families,
Veterans’ Day is this Wednesday, November 11. Our students will be honoring our Veterans’ in a variety of ways in our schools. We have some drive through events, some virtual assemblies, and students are sharing their appreciation in their writing and art. There will be no school, in-person or remotely, on Wednesday, November 11.
Reopening News:
The district is frequently asked how they make decisions regarding bringing students back for in-person learning.
We first look to the Washington State Department of Health Decision Tree. This provides a general overview for districts.
The second source of guidance is our local county health departments. The district continues to meet with the Snohomish and Island County Health Districts on a weekly basis to discuss trends and changing protocols. The health districts can provide us with district specific information including case counts in our district and where the “hot spots” are emerging. Data from this week showed another increase in infection rate per 100,000 over a two week period, although it was a bit smaller of an increase than previous weeks. Both health districts have reported that in spite of the increased case count per 100,000 per two week period, districts can proceed with reopening plans for elementary students provided the district has capacity to serve students, can complete screening protocols, has required PPE available, and has the necessary staff.
Finally, the district’s lead nurses attend weekly meetings with the local health districts and district administrators to review community and individual school data. Our nurses monitor student absence reports for each of our buildings, which also informs our decision-making process. If illness rates are high, we are less inclined to bring additional students onto our campuses for in-person learning.
The district examines all of the information listed above. If we have specific concerns or questions, we consult with health district leaders to obtain more specific guidance. Currently, the district intends to bring 4th and 5th grade students back on November 30, but only if the number of cases flattens or decreases over a two week period.
Our appreciation goes out to our families who are being vigilant with their children’s symptoms and keeping their children home as instructed.
Other news:
Families may be wondering what the ramifications of the passage of Referendum 90 will mean for their child(ren). Information will be forthcoming.

Hello!
My name is Emily Goodman and I am the new Warm Cots for Kids Coordinator. I have taken over the role from Dian and I hope I can continue her great work!
As I am sure you aware we have changed how we will be distributing coats this year. Last year we were able to let kids pick a coat out upstairs at the food bank. Due to Covid we are unable to let anyone in the building other than our volunteers. So in order to reach as many kids as possible we are doing a pop-up tent distribution!
We will have a pop-up tent in the parking lot of the food bank on serve days. We have also partnered with the school district to have a pop-up tent at the schools when the weekly school lunches are picked-up. We will rotate between the designated schools weekly.
I will need a minimum of two volunteers per distribution date. All of the sites will be outdoors.
There will be 2-3 pop-up tents with side walls to keep out the weather. Masks and social distancing will be required.
Here are the dates and locations for distribution.

Transportation Plans AND Change of Plans (REPEAT)
Our office works incredibly hard on making sure we understand your daily transportation plans for each student. To that end, it is really important that you make sure you have done all of the following:
- K - G3 students have all had a "blue" daily transportation form sent home by the EBE office to be completed by you regarding the daily plan for your child's transportation to and from school. G4 and G5 will have these sent home when they return to school on 10.26.
- If there is a change from this plan, you must call the office or send a detailed note/Email in advance, so that we might write a "pickup slip" to inform the teacher to make sure that we all know the plan for each child and can communicate about the change.
- Finally, keep the EBE phone number (360.629.1290) loaded in your phone. We know there is the occasional emergency that requires a quicker change at day's end. Please do everything you can to avoid this as it does get a bit hectic, but if there is an emergency, please don't hesitate to call.
I thank you in advance for helping us with this significant safety and communication issue.
