Message From Principal Engdall
Greeting Shaw Montessori,
Happy November!
This week at Shaw we quarantined two classrooms. Both classes were sent into quarantine when over the course of 14 days, 3 students in those classrooms tested positive. We are still experiencing a large surge. Most cases have been wide spread and have affected a large number of classrooms. When we become aware of a case we send a general exposure letter to the community. An outbreak notice is only sent when we are aware of 3 cases in a single classroom.
Vaccines are now available for the 5-11-year-olds. List below are just a few opportunities should you wish to participate.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Shaw S.T.A.R. Award Winners!
Congratulations to our Shaw 2021/2022 School Year S.T.A.R. Award Winners!
(Special Thanks and Recognition)
The S.T.A.R. Award recognizes the positive impact of our staff members
and celebrates those who go above and beyond.
Rose Prasad, Nurse Shaw Montessori
Rose is extremely dedicated to our students and community. During the pandemic, she has gone above and beyond to keep our community safe and healthy. She has pool testing 200 people on our campus weekly, doing health screening, contacting tracing, and communicating with staff as well as the daily health care of our students. The three words to describe Rose are dedicated, empathetic, and knowledgeable.
Benita Meza, Lead Custodian Shaw Montessori
Benita values and takes pride in the cleanliness and beauty of the Shaw campus. With all of the additional cleaning this last year, she has gone above and beyond to make sure all of the classrooms and shared spaces are cleaned and sanitized. She takes the initiative and does not have to be asked in many instances for a job to be done. The caring that Ms. Benita puts into making sure our classrooms are clean is day is reciprocated and appreciated by the children, as they want to stack chairs and help pick up to help make her job easier. The three words to describe Benita are hardworking, caring, and efficient.
Our October S.T.A.R. award winners will be recognized at the Governing Board meeting on November 18th at 6:15 pm.

Message From Laura Hildwein
How to help your child get a stress-free vaccine
-Choose an appointment time when you and your child will not feel stressed or rushed.
-Your child’s experience will be shaped by your guidance and example. Before and during the appointment use a calm, positive tone of voice.
-Tell them in advance that they need a shot if they ask.
-Be honest. Tell them it may hurt briefly.
-Validate their feelings and explain why they need the shot. The extent of the explanation should be based on their age and understanding.
-Talk to your doctor about numbing cream (ask to get the cream ahead of time as it takes 30-60 minutes to numb the skin)
-Help them practice breathing and staying relaxed
-Distract them during the shot (video on your phone, telling jokes, allow them to hold your hand, talk about something the child is looking forward to)
-Comfort the child after, maybe a reward like ice cream, read them a story or a trip to the park.
Hope these tips help! Laura.Hildwein@phxschools.org

Garden Update
Greetings!
We started a new curriculum block this week – PARTS OF A PLANT/FLOWERS. This has been an exciting lesson so far. The students learned the anatomy of a plant with an emphasis on flowers. We delved into the reproductive anatomy of a flower and learned how flowers make baby seeds. We even helped some of our pollinators by using Qtips to cross pollinate zinnias. The students really enjoyed this project and some even overcame their fear of bees.
We also smashed pumpkins in proper post-Halloween fashion and fed them to the chickens (thanks Meagan). We are still waiting for the chickens to start laying. The suspense among the students is very high. Any day now! We received the ALL CLEAR for our tree planting. We will commence next week! Hopefully they will provide some shade that the community has belabored...in 25 years.
We can always use coffee grounds and can donations. Please make sure the coffee grounds have been brewed. You can pick up used grounds at Starbucks for free. We also prefer that your cans are uncrushed (the small kiddos love this task), however, we will accept crushed cans as well. You can drop them off at the table outside of the front office entrance.
We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Here’s the link to Home Depot gift cards: https://www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards
Here’s my email: james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Thanks to Owen’s mom for the gift card donation!

Message From Shaw PTA
PRESENTS!
(Yes, I know that is not what the Holidays mean. And no, this is not going to be a deep introspective conversation about the words "presents" and "presence", although, of course, there's a lot to unpack there)
You know how you ask some people what they would like for Christmas (in my case, because that's the holiday I celebrate) and they say "nothing" and then you ask my 6-year-old and he hands me 4 catalogs with hundreds of smudged blue circles.
(If you are wondering, he has requested 3 presents this year:
1.A Dyson fan
2. A wasp nest
3. A bird thing where they can come and visit me and live in the backyard and eat bird food and where they can have a bird drink if it is hot in the summer and they want to have a drink" aka, a backyard bird bar.)
Teachers are the same. Most of the time if you ask them if they would like a gift they will reply, "no thank you" or "you could get something for the children". And that's how they end up with 10,000 coffee mugs.
At the beginning of the year, the PTA sent out a questionnaire to the teachers and the staff to get their preferences. We asked about favorite scents, flowers, colors, restaurants and even favorite charities. We also found out if a teacher had any allergies or dietary restrictions (pro tip, do NOT give a zucchini to Ms. Patti as a present)
Then we compiled all the info and we have it all in one place for you! Just click HERE or go to Shawmontessoripta.com and scroll down to the bottom of the page. At the left-hand side, you will find a link that says "Teacher Likes". Click on that link and you will see a page with all of the teacher info you could want.
Now of course, some teachers were more forthcoming with the information and some teachers weren't. And if you are in Middle School, you are just going to have to figure it out on your own. (I hear coffee mugs are a good idea.)
So have a wonderful Holiday season and hopefully we've made it (a tiny bit) easier for you!
Now, where can I find someone who will gift wrap a wasp nest?
