Everyone Can Be A S.T.A.R at Eagle Heights Elementary!

Dear Eagle Heights Families,

I hope you enjoyed this amazing weekend! I am so excited that we will begin school in two weeks! We are truly overjoyed that we will be seeing several of our students face-to-face on September 8!

I wanted to share with you that my second major is in biology and I love science! One thing that has always intrigued me is the fact that there is no such thing as darkness. There is only the absence of light! I have challenged our staff to be the light for each other, our students and our community! I am challenging you to do the same! I found the poem below and wanted to share it with all of you.

I know that you have a lot of questions regarding class lists, open house, supplies, transportation, etc. You will find that I have addressed many of those items in this newsletter. If you still have questions after you read it, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

"Everyone Can Be a S.T.A.R. at Eagle Heights!"

Kindly,

Mrs. Slack

"Be the Light!"

You are a precious gem amongst stones.
You are a star shining most brilliantly
In the darkness of the night.

Be that star and hope that you can serve
As a beacon of hope and light the path
For those around you.

Be a shining example of beauty and divinity
Leading the way and leaving a trail
For others to emulate.

Live so that others may look up to you,
And follow the path of goodness and nobility
Which you thread upon.

When situations seem tough at times
And circumstances are beyond control
Don’t stop shining.

Remember that stars glitter most brightly
And shine with all their exquisiteness
In the darkest of hours.

So be the light, be the brightest star
And continue being who you truly are…

First Day of School & SSD ReEntry

Based on decisions at the special Board of Education meeting, the first day of school has been postponed to September 8, 2020. According to the Clay County Public Health Center (CCPHC), this will allow for more time for the community-wide mask requirements and other mitigation strategies to take effect. At the elementary schools, students will attend in-person daily. CCCPHC recommends this model for instruction based upon scientific evidence that indicates transmission of COVID-19 is less likely in elementary aged students. In addition, the challenges of virtual instruction at this level make in-person instruction preferable for this age group.

Important resources regarding specifics about face-to-face learning, virtual learning, and more can be found on the district website (smithvilleschooldistric.net) and some are linked below.

Class Lists

We know that your child and you have been patiently awaiting the posting of class lists. We are happy to let you know that they will be posted in PS by Tuesday morning. If you check powerschool and you do not see your child's name on a class list, please email Mrs. Doll at dolla@smithville.k12.mo.us.

Virtual Students

We are going to miss those of you that will not be with us face-to-face, but we want you to know that you are still a part of Eagle and we will include you in our activities! Our virtual teachers are making plans on Tuesday and we will send those out once they are finished!

District Technology Distribution

All students in 1st-6th grades (virtual and face-to-face) and virtual kindergarten students who need a device can pick them up at the PAC from August 25-28th from 7 AM to 7 PM. The district has created the opportunity for students who are attending face-to-face in grades 1st-6th to have a device at home and at school. The device at home can be used if we are forced into virtual learning or for learning to continue on snow days. Only Kindergarteners signed up for our virtual program will receive a device during the August device handout. Other Kindergartners will not receive a device unless there is a district wide quarantine or the individual student transitions to a virtual program. Under this scenario, the student would take their class iPad home.

Virtual Back-to-School Night

Back-to-School Night will be virtual this year! We will send out a link to our school's bitmoji classrooms on September 2. You will be able to click on different icons in our virtual school to locate videos and information regarding your child's classroom.

New Kindergarten Students

We sent information earlier regarding our Kindergarten screening procedures for this fall due to the cancelation of spring screenings as a result of COVID. If your child has been enrolled in kindergarten at Eagle Heights, you should have received a letter with his/her buddy classroom placement. We have attached a sample of the letter here below.

If you did not receive this letter or if you have not enrolled your child for kindergarten and you would like to, please contact Mrs. Doll at dolla@smithville.k12.mo.us or call (816)532-5959 and we will figure it out with you.

We are in the process of planning a special first day for our kindergarten students. It is going to look different this year, but we want to welcome them to Eagle with open arms. We will send this information to our parents once this plan is created!

Eagle Heights PTO Needs YOU!

We have set a goal to get 200+ memberships total this year! If we reach our goal, we will have a HUGE popsicle party, with physical distancing of course!

We currently have 33 memberships for 2020-21.

What is PTO exactly?

Group of volunteers made up of Parents & Teachers

And what does PTO do?

This year more than ever, PTO needs your help to make this school year as successful as possible! With the needs for additional supplies and materials, the school alone does not have the additional budget for all the things. That's where PTO steps in to help!!

With your $10 membership donation, PTO is able to:

  • Provide individual materials and supplies for the students
  • Teacher/staff appreciation
  • Fall/Valentine school parties (however they may look this year)
  • Bring in school fundraisers
  • Provide teacher grants to help with special projects throughout the year and anything else that will undoubtedly come up as we all are navigating these unprecedented times

Does my $10 membership fee require my physical time to volunteer?

Absolutely not! While we would love to see your face when volunteers are allowed back in the building, your $10 membership does not require you to volunteer any of your time.

Please remember, we need a NEW membership from you each year. Invite grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors! You don't need to have a child at Eagle Heights PTO!

We need YOUR help to ensure a safe & successful year for our kids!

You can use this link to sign up! We've made payment easy with a Venmo account this year!

Eagle Heights PTO Supply Drive

Many parents and community members have asked, “As school reopens, how can we help?” Here is one way. Consider signing up to donate a supply as we prepare to welcome students this fall. This supply drive is sponsored by Eagle Heights PTO.

Eagle Heights PTO Donation Drive!

Due to covid, we are asking for your help by donating extra items to Eagle Heights. Please checkout the items listed on the sign up Genius attached here. Our PTO will be collecting these items on the night of our open house supply drop off.
