Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, A.K.A. Coco Chanel, was born on August 19th, 1883 in Saumur France. Although the name Chanel is associated with luxury and glamour, the fashion designer behind the glamour was not raised in a very glamorous setting. At the age of 12, Cocoś mother passed away of tuberculosis. As a result, Cocoś father put her and her four siblings in an orphanage. At the orphanage the nuns who raised her taught her how to so, leading to her extremely successful career in fashion. In 1910 she opened her first shop in Paris selling hats, then she added multiple stores and began producing clothing. Coco left an incredible impact on the world of fashion before passing away on January 10th, 1971.
