Did You Know?
Corporal Freddie Stowers from Sandy Springs in Anderson County, SC, was the only African American to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor during World War I? During the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in Setember 1918, a group of German soldiers signaled their intent to surrender. As the Americans crossed an open area to accept their surrender, the Germans jumped back into their trenches and opened fire, killing half of Stowers men. Despite being wounded by machine gun fire, as he crawled across the battlefield, he urged his soldiers to keep fighting. The Americans were eventually able to take the hill. Stowers's body was laid to rest at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery. At the time of his death he was recommended for the Medal of Honor, but the paperwork got lost. It was not until 1991, that the paperwork was found and President George H. W. Bush awareded the long-awaited medal to Stowers's surviving sisters. Seven South Carolinians received the Medal of Honor during World War I.
