Oberon's Envy
by Fernando Salazar
people's emotion usualy control how they act.
Although Oberon doesn't show many emotions through out Mid Summer Night Dream. He most definitely shows how his envy for the Indian boy controls him. all his actions seem to be out of his character. Many of his action show how envy controls him. this can be seen when he bewitch Tatiana to get the Indian boy. This supports the clamed that emotions control peoples actions because his envy cause him to deceive his lover. His envy is conform when Oberon says "I then ask of her her changeling child. Which straight she gave me and her fairy sent To bear him to bower in FairyLand " (IV.1.3). Oberon utter this comment to show that his plan to steal the Indian child have succeeded and he got what he envied from Tatiana. This gives more character to Oberon and gives him and important role and is more like a side story to the main story of Mid Summer Night Dream. this gives more of a background and more entrainment to the audience in the Elizabeth period. As Oberon's story gives more background and makes more sense of what is happening to the lovers and why. This shows that "people's emotions usually control how the act".
people's actions can influence other people's lives
Oberon confirms that "people's actions influence other people's lives" when his plan get Lysander and Hermia love in shambles. The main conflict in Mid-Summer Night Dream is caused by Oberon's actions. His Plan to make Tatiana to give him the Indian boy affected the lovers, Tatiana and Bottoms. For example when Oberon orders Puck to put the flowers dew into Demetrius eyes but he did not take in count there might be more people in the woods. In the play Puck states "This is the woman, but not this the man"(III.ii.2). This sentence provides the information to confirm that people's actions affects other people's lives. This gives a cause to why and how the conflict came to be. Oberon's orders to puke to put flower dew in an Athenian man's eyes cause havoc in Lysander's and Hermia's love proves that Oberon’s actions affect the lovers. This also affects Demetrius and Helena when Oberon try to correct his mistake and bewitched Demetrius to fall in love with Helena. Helena was then affected because Lysander and Demetrius fell in love with her and she believes to be a joke and that they are mocking her. This all proves that "people's actions influence other people lives”. Oberon confirms that "people's actions influence other people's lives" when his plan get Lysander and Hermia love in shambles. There is magic in the world
Although it is believed and question Oberon demonstrate the use of magic all trough out Mid-Summer Night Dream. Magic was seen use by Oberon in many ways from him becoming invisible to the use of a magic flower dew. Also the need to mention if Oberon is responsible enough to be able to use magic is another question. Oberon use his magical powers of a fairy king to become invisible and it can also be seen in his servant Puck. Oberon's servant was shown to have the magic to shape shift and super speed. Oberon mentioned "the herb I showed thee once the juice of it on the sleeping eyelids laid will make a man or woman madly dote upon the next living creature it sees" (II.i.6). Oberon's plan involves a magical flower that can make anyone fall in love with the next living thing it sees. This is a great example of magic as this can’t be explained. This is just one of the many examples that was shown proving magic. The flower is something that is use trough out the play and it definitely shows its capability and power. In the play the magic flower was used to make Demetrius fall in love with Helena, to do the same to Lysander, and to make Tatiana fall in love with bottom to steal the Indian boy.
