Principal's Message
Dear Petway Parents,
December is such an exciting month. It is a time for family, friends, and the true spirit of giving. We are teaching our Patriots the meaning of the holiday season by encouraging them to think of others.
We appreciate all our parents who attended our fall conferences. Communicating with your child’s teacher will insure your child’s success and provide you with valuable information.
With all of December’s anticipation, it is more important than ever to keep your child focused on school. I encourage you to continue speaking with your child about what they are learning in school, review your child’s assignments, and remind children to always follow our Pathway to Patriot Pride. The holiday season is the perfect time to focus on positive behavior and good choices.
This month we encourage your family to spend time with our family. Our Petway Players, along with PPSA, will be hosting Santa and Me on December 4, 2015. Come out and enjoy dinner, Santa, and plenty of photo opportunities.
To wrap up our month, our grand finale will be our musical presentation of “A Holiday Extravaganza”. Please join all our students as they entertain you with the gift of song on December 16th. Petway will host two shows. Kindergarten through 2nd grade will perform at 9:45 and 3rd through 5th grade will perform at 1:30. Our Chorus will perform on stage during our afternoon performance. All are invited to this melodious presentation!
Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a joyous holiday season. Enjoy your time together as a family, reflect on the triumphs of the past year, and set goals for 2015.
Happy Holidays,
Mrs. Jennifer Frederico

Encouragement
Quote: "A word of encouragement during a failure is worth more than an hour of praise after a success."

A-10 VIPs: Thank you to all the parents who sent in tissues for the Bordo Bunchers' runny noses! Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Ganio for all the love and endless treats!
Fifth Grade
November is always a quick month, and the fifth graders have been keeping busy! In Reading, students have been continuing their journey with Milo in The Phantom Tollbooth. Students are really enjoying this novel so be sure to ask your child about it! In Writing, students are wrapping up Unit 1: Narrative Writing. Classes will be transitioning into Unit 2, which is all research-based writing. In Math, students are starting Chapter 4: Division. Be sure to continue practicing basic multiplication and division fast facts, as these will certainly come in handy in this chapter, as well as upcoming fraction chapters. Fifth grade classes have a new Social Studies textbook this year, and now that we have entered the 2nd Marking Period, students are diving into Social Studies for the first time this year. They will begin with the French and Indian War and make their way into the American Revolution. Our Patriots are showing their good manners by donating to our service learning project. We have been collecting items for Samaritan’s Purse and will be sending shoeboxes filled with small toys and other items to children in need around the world. Thank you all so much for your donations! Our Patriots are great!
AMSA
The AMSA fifth graders are “rolling” into the second marking period. In Math, the students just finished a unit on division. They learned many different algorithms for solving division problems with 2-digit divisors. In Science, the students recently finished learning about the classification system for living things. They will begin to create a dichotomous key using the iPads. In STEM, the students learned about wheel and axles and applied their knowledge to a roller skating field trip. In Language Arts students are deep into Collier’s historical drama, My Brother Sam is Dead, set in America during the Revolutionary War. In Writing, students are researching notable figures from the American Revolution to produce a digital research report. In Social Studies, students are learning about the early European settlements in America and how they contributed to the diverse country we are today.
VIP’s: Thank you to all the parents who attended parent-teacher conferences.
